We have two rather unique golf events to look at this week, coming from both the PGA Tour and the DPWT. I have two selections for each event, and I’m expecting big performances from all of them.
Starting with the DP World Tour we have the Singapore Classic, where Ockie Strydom returns in a bid to regain his title. But there is a very strong field against him this week, and it will take a serious performance from him if he is to retain his crown.
Meanwhile, over on the PGA Tour we have the Valspar Championship which is always a highly entertaining event. Not least because the course is always sets up to be technically difficult. Speaking as a golfer myself, it makes such a refreshing change after the usual Birdie fests we so often see on the PGA Tour.
As William Hill are offering seven places on the DPWT and a big eight on the DPWT, that’s where I’ll be placing my bets this week. Not only that, if you don’t already have an account here, you just need to sign up, place a £10 bet and you’ll get £30 in free bets. Perfect timing for this week’s great golfing action.
The DP World Tour heads over to the Laguna National Golf Club this week for only the second ever Singapore Classic and the course is absolutely superb. It’s 7420 yards long, with undulations on most of the fairways, so it really does pay to sweat the short stuff here!
But even then, you don't always have a flat lie, so the approach shots aren't as easy as they seem either. That being said, if you can hit your wedges well, it can be very rewarding when you find the sweet spots on the green.
Every pin seems to get placed in a tougher position as the week goes on too, so although wedge play is important, it's not just a case of who gains the most strokes on this course. The key factor pivots on which player has the best distance control, because they need to use spin to even get close to some of these pins.
Ultimately, that means you need a player who is reliable in the distance control area, but also one who can control their trajectory, because a lot of the greens are above or below and take no prisoners.
To give you a clue, the player who made it to the top of the pack last year was Ockie Strydom, who carded a superb final round of 63 to beat Sami Valimaki by one shot, and this week's event is going to be another absolute cracker. A very strong field looks set up and ready to tee off this week, and I can't wait.
My strongest betting tip for this week’s Singapore Classic is Yannik Paul, who returns fresh from a four-week break. This is a course that suits him perfectly when he is firing on all cylinders, and as I have mentioned already, you need players that are good with their wedges and approach shots and those are Yannik Paul’s specialties.
In a recent interview, Yannik said that he took the four weeks off to get himself ready for this particular event and that he is more than ready to kick on with his season now. His stats show that he stands fifth in strokes gained from approach and this is something he has been perfecting behind the scenes. Yannik Paul is a target-golf specialist and I am expecting a fantastic performance from him at this course.
Next up in my squad for this week is Rikuya Hoshino, who has been a vast improver this season on the DP World Tour, and doesn’t look like stopping anytime soon. He won his first DP World Tour title in the Qatar Masters this year, and it was a very professional and composed performance.
Even though he didn’t play as well in the Jonsson Workwear Open or the SDC Championship, this is somewhat typical after a debut win and I think he’ll come right back to form here on a course that is more likely to suit him. Hoshino is another player that is just superb when it comes to approach play and he currently sits in second place for strokes gained on approach shots. I can easily see him out-performing his 50/1 odds here.
On the PGA Tour this week we head to the Copperhead Course at Innisbrook Resort, which is a very tricky course to assess. There is only a handful of players I think are capable of making it onto the leaderboard here this week, never mind onto my shortlist for this event.
The Copperhead is a very unique golf course and there is no doubt in my mind that you need to be a very specific type of player to do well here. It’s a 7340 yard Par 71 with very undulating fairways and greens, plus there are a lot of doglegs. Not just that, nine out of the 18 holes have water and the rough has been slightly lengthened as well to make it even trickier.
The one thing that does favour the players is that there is usually only a light wind here. I’d expect the winning score to be around 15 under this week, but you do need a real all-rounder with a wide range of skills to achieve that. This is a very tough golf course so we should see a really good event.
My first selection for the Valspar this week is world number 35, Sungjae Im. He’s a very impressive player to watch because he moves the ball both ways, which is a must-have skill on this course.
A lot of the approach shots here come from very tight angles, which he is more than capable of transversing and he should feel right at home on this course. Beyond skill, you also need a player with a lot of patience, because there are plenty of bogeys along the way. Sungjae is one of those who just takes everything in his stride and he has a lovely short game to go with it. He is now a two-time PGA Tour winner and even though he’s a tad short in the market, I think he is our best bet for this event.
Next in the squad is six-time PGA Tour winner Keegan Bradley. He is another player that has the iron game to hit plenty of greens in regulation this week and if the weather conditions remain calm, he should do well here.
Keegan is also one of those players that can just go on a roll when he starts making putts, so if he gets a good start this week, I’m pretty sure he will be there at the finish too.
