Today’s betting tip is from the Stratford Jumps meeting, where my selection runs in the 3m 3.5f Handicap Chase. Whilst this horse is no spring chicken at the age of 10, he has the strongest peak form of any of the horses in this field, and his last run showed that he has retained a large portion of his ability. Around this sharper and flatter track, I think he has a serious chance.
If you are new to my content, most weeks I post four articles for Betting.co.uk. They are typically betting tips, but occasionally you’ll see other types of content like big race trends. And if you look back through my previous articles, I have antepost tips for both the 2026 Cheltenham Festival and the 2026 Grand National, which are still active and definitely worth checking out.
With just the seven runners, most bookmakers are offering the standard two places. However, bet365 is offering three for this race and the stand out best price at 6/1. If you don’t have an account here, they also have a fantastic new customer sign up offer. bet £10, you’ll get £30 in free betss. With the 2025 Punchestown Festival getting closer, you’ll want a good bookie on your side.
My betting tip for today is Pottlerath for trainer Matt Sheppard and jockey Stan Sheppard. Over the past 5 years, Matt has operated at above his usual strike rate with his runners at Stratford and to a £1 level stake, they have returned a profit of +£15.00.
Pottlerath has been poor over the last 12 months, but has recorded two very solid back to back runs over fences. Off his reducing mark, I think today could be third time lucky for him and in this article, I’ll explain why.
If you look through the form of the horses in this field, no horse has achieved what Pottlerath has over fences. He rattled off a hat-trick over fences in the summer of 2023 off marks of 98, 105 and 108, producing a peak RPR of 112. No horse in this field has won off a mark in excess of 100, with the highest win away from Pottlerath coming from Getthepot off a mark of 98.
Whilst Pottlerath hasn’t looked the same horse this season as he did two years ago, he has held his form well in the last two runs over fences producing RPRs of 91 and 92, with neither race run to suit him.
Three runs ago, in August 2024, Pottlerath bounced back to form over this course and distance. It was quite a messy race where they dawdled before sprinting for home on the run to the second last. Whilst Pottlerath was able to go with them initially, he was unable to sustain the gallop at that tempo and faded out at the finish. The winner has held his form since, with form figures of 232 over fences off a 3lb higher mark. The horse who was second also placed next time out, off a 2lb higher mark. So the strength of the race looks solid enough.
Last time out, they stepped Pottlerath up to 3m 6.5f at Chepstow and he ran a blinder. The winner has extremely strong form around Chepstow (111342P). He had bounced back to form and was very well handicapped, so there was no shame in that defeat. I’d argue that Pottlerath paid the price for trying to go with the winner, which lost him second place on the run-in. He travelled as well as any of them, and simply looked like a non-stayer over that longer trip. I think the 3f drop back in trip will be much more suitable.
Pottlerath also drops down in class here. His latest race at Chepstow was a 0-110 Class 4 Handicap where the winner, Gats and Co, was rated 109 and ran to a RPR of 118. Today, Pottlerath drops into a 0-100 Class 5 Handicap, so there is nothing of the Chepstow winner’s quality in this field. In fact the highest rated horse in today’s lineup is Groom De Cotte, who is rated just 97, which is 11lb inferior to Gats And Co, or 20lb after the latter’s rise for winning.
Pottlerath’s previous run at Stratford was in this company, off a mark of 96 and he now returns to this level off a 5lb lower mark of 91. With front runner Getthepot in the field, we should get a more genuine tempo to the race, which should suit Pottlerath well. Jumping is one of his best assets, so the faster they go, the more pressure there will be on their jumping. While Pottlerath should stand the test, some of those in opposition may not.
Considering all of the various angles, I think Pottlerath has a decent chance of making it third time lucky over marathon trips, especially now he has dropped to a mark where he can be competitive, despite his age. The combination of his ability, the shorter trip, and the drop back into an easier race, can all see him go extremely well.
There is always a chance in these low-grade races that you’ll bump into a handicap plot, but I’d certainly fancy Pottlerath’s chances, and with three places on offer, I think he’s a lovely each way bet. Given Pottlerath’s age, the quality of race and the horses we are looking at here, I’ve kept the stakes very modest. However, at a price of 6/1, I certainly feel he is worth a small bet today and hopefully he can do the business for us.
For the less reliable and regressive types like Pottlerath, free bets can come in handy. Below is a list of our partner bookmakers and their sign up offers that you can take advantage of today. Why not take a look?
Unless it’s an occasion like one of the big Festivals, then I generally post four articles each week here at betting.co.uk. These are predominantly betting tips, you’ll also see other content like big race trends. However, the majority of my betting tips are exclusive to members of my Discord server.
After 11/2, 15/2 and 20/1 winners last week, I have found five more winners for my members this week, at prices of 6/1, 2/1, 13/2, 7/4 & 4/1. I didn’t even post any bets on Wednesday or Thursday, as I don’t force bets out for the sake of it.
If you would like to see what those tips were, more information can be found on my X account - @RacingGav. Alternatively, I have a 7-day free Discord trial currently available. Why not give it a try and judge for yourself?
