In the aftermath of Royal Ascot, the racing was pretty tame earlier in the week, but it’s starting to pick up again now. And that brings me straight to my two tasty selections for Newmarket on Thursday. In fairness, it’s a fairly tricky day of racing, but I’ve spotted two with outstanding chances that should bring in some profit for us.
The first is a maiden who is primed for his first win and the drop back in trip here looks sure to suit. My second pick does have weight to give away to the field, but holds very strong winning credentials that have tempted me in.
Moving forward, we have a busy weekend ahead. On Saturday, we have some good racing from Newmarket and Newcastle, plus the Group 1 Pretty Polly for the fillies over at the Curragh. Then on Sunday we have the epic race that is the Irish Derby to look forward to. But before we get too far ahead of ourselves, let’s take a look at my Newmarket betting tips for Thursday.
I have a cracking free bet offer for you to try out today. It comes from BetUK and if you
bet £10, you’ll get £30 in free bets. If you plan on having a punt, then why not try out this offer?
My first selection at Newmarket comes in the six furlong Sprint Handicap, and we have some really nice runners in the lineup here. Top weight is the James Ferguson-trained Drama, who sets a fair standard based on his all weather win at Kempton last time out. But on this faster turf surface he has a lot to prove, whilst giving weight to the field. Connections were asked about the apparent improvement in their gelding, and they put it down to the switch back to all weather, so the firm ground here at Newmarket doesn’t exactly look ideal.
Ezra Cee won on his three-year-old debut for the De Foy team at odds of just 4/6. However, he looked to be quite an awkward ride that day and made hard work of things in what was an ordinary contest, so he does need to improve on that aspect. Nonetheless, he clearly has potential and is dangerous to write off.
Looking at the rest, I think this could be a really good opportunity for
Waleefy
to break his maiden on the fourth time of asking for the Shadwell team. He has shown plenty of promise over longer trips, but dropping back to six furlongs this time could be just what he needs.
He has been a strong traveller in his previous races right until the six furlong pole, and the fact that Jim Crowley booked to ride for the first time strongly suggests that this colt is ready
to put in a big run.
My second selection of the day comes in the mile Handicap and this is an intriguing contest that’s open to both three and four-year-olds. Composite is likely to go off as favourite for George Boughey, following a big run behind the improving Metabolt last time out. However, his efforts prior to that were poor, and this will be his third run in very quick succession, so he has a great deal to prove here.
Jayyash is a nicely bred three-year-old colt for John Gosden, who clearly hasn’t shown us his best form just yet, but the penny will drop for him sooner or later and he is weighted to go fairly well if he can put his best foot forward.
So, I’m going to take a chance on the top-weighted Pearl Eye, who is a very consistent sort for the Daryll Holland team, and despite giving weight all round, he sets a pretty good standard. He has form on a fast surface and on his penultimate start at Chester, he finished behind Tony Montana, which gives him a strong chance of getting his nose in front here. He will need to be at his best to win this race, but as I have reservations about some of his rivals, Pearl Eye is definitely worth a punt.
