It was a frustrating watch yesterday. Billyjoh was backed with five places, but he was left with a lot to do, then needed to challenge wide, and as a consequence he only managed sixth. So, we dust ourselves off and go again, but this time, we turn our attention to the All Weather, where one has caught my eye in the Racing League action. I know we have Glorious Goodwood and Galway this week, but this horse just looks too good to miss!
If you’re reading my articles for the first time today, I post four betting tips most weeks, but you’ll sometimes find other types of content too, including guides, big race trends and antepost picks. Speaking of which, you might want to check out my antepost pick for the 2025 St Leger. Moving on, I’ve already posted tips for the 2026 Cheltenham Festival, and the 2026 Aintree Grand National. Take a look if you can, and get on at those early prices!
Lastly, I’ll be back with more betting tips for you tomorrow and Saturday, so keep coming back.
At the time of writing, two bookmakers stand out with 10/1 and four places on offer. However, William Hill has the best sign up offer for new customers. If you deposit and bet just £10, they’ll give you £40 in free bets. That is superb value and well worth considering if you don’t already have an account.
Race 8 of the Racing League is the 6f Handicap at Wolverhampton, and I strongly fancy Intervention for the Michael Appleby yard. In this article, I’ll break down my reasons, so keep reading to find out.
From late 2023 until early 2024, Intervention went on a spree with form figures of 2731111222, which saw his mark rise from just 71, all the way up to 92. While he ran some respectable races, he always struggled off that mark, and couldn’t land another win.
Whilst he ran some great races in defeat, he went all the way through until March 2025 without recording a victory. But on 28 March 2025, I put him up for my Discord members and he won well at Lingfield, making all with a 9/1 SP.
That win came off a mark of 79, but produced a very strong RPR of 89. After eight further races, he has now returned to that last winning mark of 79, and looks handicapped to strike again.
What I also find interesting is that Intervention won the race at Lingfield on the All Weather, beating a couple of subsequent winners in the process. However, seven of his next eight runs were on the Turf.
To give some context, he has a strike rate of 12 from 103, but when split between the All Weather and Turf it’s 11 out of 66, and 1 from 37, respectively. So his strike rate is far stronger on the All Weather and so is his best form.
On his only All Weather start since his win, he produced a third place off a 3lb higher mark. Despite his relatively poor record on the Turf, he has produced two very strong performances lately. The first was in May when second at Brighton, and the other was last time out, where when only caught late to be beaten less than a length at Catterick.
Judging him on that latest effort, he’s in good form and the return to the All Weather should bring even more out of him.
The draw could be the key to this race, as Intervention is a horse that likes to go forward. Around a sharp left-handed track like Wolverhampton, you want to be drawn low and grab the rail early.
Intervention has been drawn in stall two today, and the only horse drawn on his inside is Scarboroughwarning, who is a hold up horse, so he should have no issue getting past that one to secure the rail.
When I look at the potential pace angles for the race, I’m not seeing a great deal. Chuti Manika may want to go forward but he is drawn in stall nine, which makes that tough for him.
With a Racing League race, prior tactics and performances often go out of the window, as they’re valuable races and consequently very competitive. However, on paper, it looks like Intervention could get an easy lead, and assuming he does, I think he could be very tough to reel in.
Intervention is a five time winner at Wolverhampton with two of those wins coming over the 6f trip, and the other three over 7f. I think a suitably aggressive ride from stall two could see him land success number six at the track.
I often try to consider the pros and cons when looking at having a bet. For me, there are an awful lot of pros here for Intervention. His mark, his course form, his draw, his running style, his price, and the fact he is currently in form. Also, when looking for potential negatives, I’m struggling to see any. Perhaps the fact he has only recorded one win since Boxing Day 2023, but he has run many strong races in defeat, and he did manage to win in March this year.
Considering all of the elements, I’m strong on Intervention’s chances here. I feel he’s been largely kept to the Turf to protect his mark, with this Racing League target in mind. Therefore, I’m playing a full 1pt each way here.
