This week we have a cracking three day meeting at York starting on Wednesday and we are spoiled for competitive racing. We have Group action on each of the three days, with the main events on Wednesday being the Group 2 Duke Of York Clipper Stakes, followed by the Group 3 Musidora Stakes for the fillies and I have a value selection for both races.
In addition to those we have two Class 2s, starting with the Jorvik Handicap, where there are some very interesting contenders, and also the Churchill Tyres Handicap Sprint, where some old favourites will take on the new blood coming through. Get ready for an exciting ride this week!
With another whole three days of fantastic racing coming up at York, it could just be worth your while taking a look at this deal from BetVictor. Bet £5, and you’ll get £30 in free bets. Plenty going on this week and if you are having a bet, then you may as well take advantage of this offer.
My first betting tip for Wednesday comes in the opening race, where we have a very competitive Class 2 Handicap, and there are a few runners in here that I fancy to go well. Klondike, running for William Haggas, will likely go off favourite, and he has more Group entries this season too. Crystal Delight is a nice gelding, who won easily on his seasonal debut at Epsom last month and he is well worth another crack. He will need a fair amount of luck in running, but he has the ability to go close provided he doesn’t encounter traffic problems.
Track Of Time has scope for improvement this season, and it would be no surprise to see Ian Williams turn this gelding into a smart Stayer. He is only a four-year-old though, and coming into this race after over 100 days off the track may not be in his favour. Keep an eye on the market with him. However, the one for me is Kihavah, for Adrian Keatley, a course and distance winner, who ran a really encouraging race at Newmarket ten days agothat sets him up for an improved effort here. He has a really good speed figure on a firm surface, and he should get very competitive indeed here.
The Churchill Handicap is going to be a really good race to watch and the two 10 year olds Summerghand and Dakota Gold, could easily bounce back to form here off their weights, and I’d love to see either of them get competitive. I would favour Summerghand of the two and his latest effort at Newmarket wasn’t too bad either. He is clearly in good health and I think he will run a big race again.
Great Ambassador is a horse that I really like too, but perhaps it’s time for
Aberama Gold
to get back into the winners enclosure.
He was a little unfortunate at Newmarket last week, but looked like he could improve plenty for it
and at a double figure price, I will take my chance on him with plenty of places available.
In the Clipper Stakes we have a decent field, where Azure Blue deservedly heads the market. But it’s the three Karl Burke runners that stand out for me. Cold Case and Marshman are very interesting prospects here, making appeal at double figure prices, but I think his four-year-old gelding Swingalong must have a huge chance here off his weight.
He is a good mover on firm conditions, and pushed Shaquielle to two lengths last season, so off a mark of just 107, he is very well treated. The faster ground seems to be key for him and he receives weight all round here. It still won’t be an easy task for him, because this is a Group 2 race after all, but he is well-treated here and I think he will come home strong late in the race.
The Musidora is always a decent race for the fillies and this year looks no different. Friendly Soul looks the one to beat, following her dominant display at Newmarket 10 days ago, and she is likely to progress from that run too. She is a daughter of Kingman, who always enjoyed fast conditions, so she should go well again. She wasn’t very well supported on debut though, which makes me think her win was unexpected, so perhaps that form is hard to trust.
Due to that minor concern, I‘ll take a chance on the Ralph Beckett filly, Classical Song, instead. Her best performance to date was her win at Sandown over 7 furlongs on fast ground, but next time out she was only four lengths back off Ylang Ylang over the mile at Newmarket in soft conditions, where she stayed on very nicely. As a daughter of Lope De Vega, I think the step up in trip will be well within her reach, and the fast ground should suit her well too. I think she is likely to improve plenty as the season goes on and she gets my vote here, running for in-form connections.
