Three overpriced selections for Day 3
Day 3 of the York Ebor meeting is fast-approaching and I have some more betting tips lined up for you. My first pick lines up for the Sky Bet Handicap and seems to fit the bill perfectly, so I am convinced he is overpriced here. Selection number two comes in the Group 2 Gimcrack Stakes where Big Mojo is the current 5/2 favourite. He makes plenty of appeal, but I think there is more value elsewhere and I’ve found a horse who has the perfect profile for this race.
The highlight race of the day is the Group 1 Nunthorpe Stakes where Big Evs and Asfoora will clash for the third time. But there is another runner in here who is being overlooked at more than double the price of the front two in the market, so I’ll happily take the pair of them on.
Looking ahead to Saturday, I’m planning to put up a Lucky 15 to see if we can finish the Ebor meeting off in style. One of my selections will run in the highlight Handicap of the day, the York Ebor itself. We have an extremely competitive renewal this year and it’s sure to be a superb watch.

13:50 - Sky Bet Handicap 1m 4f - Lieber Power @ 9/1 (EW)
My hunt for value starts with the Sky Bet Handicap. Wathnan Racing and William Haggas run Wafei, who looks well-treated and has definitely improved after being gelded, judging from his last two starts. Mr Monaco looks like a horse who is worth a crack over this trip, but the 7lb rise will make it tough for him in this company. Shadow Dance is another with a chance, but his only previous run on firm ground was a little underwhelming. He was prominent early on, then found nothing which is a concern.
Which leads me to Andrew Balding’s
Lieber Power. He is proven on the ground, proven over the trip and has a lovely turn of foot for a middle distance horse.
He has won two of his last four starts, which includes a win over course and distance, plus he is only due to go up 4lb
following that win. I would like to see him held up a little here, ready to play his cards late on, but whatever happens, I think Lieber Power is a solid each way shout.
15:00 - Gimcrack Stakes 6f - Andesite @ 6/1 (EW)
The Gimcrack is one of the most exciting races of the week and we have a cracking lineup here. Camille Pissaro looks like a smart type. Despite disappointing at Royal Ascot he returned to much better form last time out at the Curragh and may still be improving. Of course, it’s hard not to fancy Big Mojo after his impressive win in the Molecomb last time out. He was slowly away, but showed a ton of speed when it mattered and he is certain to be in the mix again.
However, I’m taking them all on with the Karl Burke-trained
Andesite, who has a perfect profile for the Gimcrack. He hasn’t been seen since he won over course and distance on debut, where he showed a wicked turn of foot to chin Ya Mo Be There at the line. That form was well and truly franked, when the latter won a Listed race next time out.
Andesite is closely related to multiple Group winners, he is very lightly raced and he comes here fresh. He has the speed to get very close and he looks great value as an each way punt to me.
15:35 - Nunthorpe Stakes (Group 1) 5f - Believing @ 7/1 (EW)
The highlight race of the day is the Group 1 Nunthorpe Stakes, which promises to be a seriously good contest. Big Evs is rapid and he is sure to be popular amongst punters after his latest win in the Qatar Stakes. He will meet current favourite Asfoora for the third time, the current score is one apiece. There is very little to choose between them, as the market reflects, but I believe it’s worth taking them both on with an each way prospect.
The one I’m going with is George Boughey’s filly
Believing. She came third behind the market leaders last time out, but there is more to that than meets the eye. She was slowly away that day, and then left short of room, only finding a way out in the closing stages. The fact that
she finished less than a length behind the first two, having closed the gap effortlessly
after all of the mid-race antics, was seriously impressive. Better still, she is more than double the price of the market leaders. I think she is being seriously underestimated here with a wicked turn of foot to back that up. I really fancy her chance of making the place money at least.
