Fabio Wardley will make the first defence of his WBO heavyweight title on May 9 when he takes on fellow British heavyweight boxer Daniel Dubois at the Co-Op Live Arena in Manchester.
Wardley became the interim champion when he stopped the dangerous Joseph Parker in the 11th round at The O2 Arena back in October 2025. The Ipswich-born fighter was then promoted to full WBO champion a few weeks later after Oleksandr Usyk vacated the belt instead of fighting Wardley.
Wardley is undefeated as a professional fighter. He has won 20 of his 21 fights, with the only blemish being a draw against another Brit in Frazer Clarke in March 2024.
Since that draw, Wardley has won three consecutive fights. He defeated Clarke in a rematch when he stopped him inside the opening three minutes to retain his British, Commonwealth and WBA Continental heavyweight titles.
After that, he knocked out Justis Huni in the 10th round to win the vacant WBA interim heavyweight belt. He then beat Parker to add the WBO belt to his collection.
Wardley is a dangerous fighter. He has won 19 of his fights by knockout or stoppage with his only points win being in his first professional fight against Jakub Wojcicki back in April 2017.
Daniel Dubois is one of those fighters that is always in the mix for the big fights. At the start of his career, I was not impressed with him at all, despite being pushed to the moon.
His defeat against Joe Joyce back in 2020 was very disappointing. He seemed to be winning on points, but he had taken so much damage to his orbital bone, he opted to take the knee and get counted out. It's easy to say he quit, but we do not really know how bad the injury was.
Despite the loss, Dubois career seemed to rocket - which didn't make sense. His next fight saw him box for the vacant WBSA interim heavyweight title. He won that with a second round knockout over Bogdan Dinu. Wins over Joe Casumano, Trevor Bryan and Kevin Lerena saw him handed a world title shot with Usyk.
The win over Bryan saw him claim the WBA (Regular) title and after one defence he stepped up to face Usyk for the WBA (Super), IBF, WBO, IBO and The Ring titles. This was the fight that made me sit up and notice Dubois as a heavyweight fighter.
I may have been harsh on him in the past, but he took the fight to Usyk. The Ukrainian was rattled and had to take a four minute break for what he and the referee believed to be a low blow - I'm still not convinced to this day that it was as bad as Usyk made out, but then again, I would not like to be punched there by Dubois or any heavyweight fighter. Usyk stopped Dubois in the ninth.
Dubois stock rose after that fight and two wins later he was facing Anthony Joshua at Wembley Stadium in September 2024. Dubois had been handed the IBF champion after Usyk vacated anoother belt. Many people - myself included - thought Joshua would be too good for Dubois. We were wrong as Dubois dominated AJ and ended it in the fifth round as Dubois caugh AJ on the chin and sent him to the canvas for the fifth time in the fight to be crowned the winner.
Dubois then went for Usyk again. He put his IBF belt on the line with Usyk's WBA (Super), WBC, WBO, IBO and The Ring belts also on the line. The Brit lost again as he was knocked out in the fifth round.
He will return to the ring for the first time since that second Usyk loss when he takes on Wardley on May 9. My recent boxing predictions have been correct, but I have backed them all to go the distance. I am not confident that this will end up on points.
Both fighters have devastating punching power. If Dubois is on his game, he is difficult to stop. However, you never know which Dubois will turn up. I am backing Wardley to have his number with a sixth round stoppage to retain his title at the first attempt. I will hedge my bets a little as well, with a prediction of Wardley to win between rounds five and eight.
I just think Wardley will win this by knockout or stoppage and move a step closer to facing Usyk for all the glory.
