Commonwealth Esports Championships 2022 - A New Tournament

Publish Date: 03/04/2022

The world is finally reopening. For eSports organisations, there’s no better way to bring back the morale than uniting gamers from different countries and allowing them to celebrate one special thing they have in common: a passion for video games. This is what the Commonwealth Esports Championships is all about.

If you’re not familiar with this upcoming event, don’t worry. The Commonwealth Esports Championships is an inaugural event that has never happened before and is yet to be introduced to the public. Here, we’ll tackle all of the important things you have to know about this occasion in one sitting, leaving all the boring details out of the way. So, without further ado, let’s get to it.

Esports tournament

What are the Commonwealth Esports Championships?

The Commonwealth Esports Championships is an eSports event that will take place between the 6th and 7th of August at the International Convention Centre (ICC) in Birmingham, England. As the name of the championship suggests, its participants will mainly include members of the Commonwealth of Nations (or simply the Commonwealth).

Behind the event are big organisations such as the Global Esports Federation, the Global Esports Federation, and the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF), which is the creator of the event and the one responsible for putting the whole thing together. If you’ve heard of the CGF before, it’s probably because they’ve been holding their series of sports championships every four years since 1930 (a few decades younger than the Olympics).

The CGF has also partnered with the British Esports Association, a non-profit group formed back in 2016 to support the eSports community in the UK. When it comes to British eSports, 2022 will be particularly historic given that this is the year the CGF has reserved an occasion solely for competitive video gaming.

Other than gaming, the Commonwealth Esports Championships will also exhibit technologies relevant to gaming. If you’re into tech and want to see some hot stuff, then you shouldn’t miss the Commonwealth Esports Forum that will be held on the 5th of August, just before the main event starts. We're sure that Bet365 will be offering the top betting opportunities too!

Some Background Info

The Commonwealth Esports Championships will overlap with the 2022 Commonwealth Games, which will start on the 28th of July and end on the 8th of August. The CGF Executive Board has also decided to make the Commonwealth Esports Championship an independent event, meaning it will have its own medals, governance, and branding.

The event is further supported by the Business and Tourism Programme (BATP), a partner of the CGF that also serves a critical role in making the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games happen. Another noteworthy partner is the West Midlands Growth Company, a regional economic development agency based in Birmingham, much like those that promote Insomnia Gaming Festival too.

With the celebration of eSports being part of the new Commonwealth Sports 2026/30 Strategic Roadmap and the large number of organisations working on the Commonwealth Esports Championships, the CGF’s goal to promote eSports in the UK and to figure out how eSports will fit with the roadmap becomes very clear.

CGF President Dame Louise Martin said: “Esports is continuing to grow dramatically in terms of popularity and participation, particularly amongst young people, and we are continuing to look at ways to explore how it can align with the Commonwealth Sports Movement”.

Which Games Are Included?

The Commonwealth Esports Championships may just be the most impactful eSports tournament the UK and the rest of the Commonwealth will ever witness for a while. This is because it gives such a good sign of a great future for eSports not only among the Commonwealth territories but also in the rest of the world.

So which games will it include, exactly? Three titles have been mentioned so far, and they are Dota 2, eFootball, and Rocket League. We don’t know whether more games will be added or not, but if you’re not impressed, just consider that this is a breakthrough event. It’s still also way too early to be disappointed since the event won’t even start until August. We reckon there could be more development soon.

Conclusion

The bottom line? The Commonwealth Esports Championship is a very important eSports event that involves multiple countries from all around the globe. It shows that large institutions that have been around for a while are starting to invest more and more into competitive gaming, not just traditional sports.

You already know where the event will be staged and when it will start. If you’re an eSports fan living in the UK, especially in England, it’s too good of an occasion to miss. You can consider taking some time off to relax a little bit and meet new people with the same interest as you.
