2025-26 Ashes Fifth Test Preview
The good news is that Australia did not win the fourth Test so a whitewash is not on the cards. The even better news is that this is the fifth Test and the nightmare series for England cricket fans is almost over.
This has been as Ashes series to forget for England. They were hammered in the opening three Test matches to see Australia win the Ashes. With only pride to play for, England finally showed some fighting spirit and won the fourth Test by four wickets in a Test that last less than two days.
The frustrating part for England fans is, they showed the heart and determination that was missing in the opening three Tests. They are a good team, but they let the pressure of the Ashes get to them and rolled over.
If England win the fifth and final Test, the score will read 3-2 and to outsiders looking in, it will look like a close and entertaining series. That will be far from the truth.
I saw that England win as a blip for the Australians. They will be seething that they will not win the series 5-0. I am backing them to beat England inside three days and seal a 4-2 series victory.
The Ashes Fifth Test Betting Tips & Predictions
I backed Australia to win the fourth Test and they lost. So, yes I am backing them to win the fifth Test as well. As an England cricket fan, I will take what I can.
Seriously, I cannot see Australia losing another Test match, yet alone two on the bounce. The Aussies will be led once again by Steve Smith with Pat Cummins out through injury, Nathan Lyon is also out having picked up a hamstring problem in the third Test.
Australian batsman Usman Khawaja announced his retirement from international cricket and his final Test match will be the fifth Ashes Test in Sydney. This will be Khawaja's 88th and final Test match for Australia, he has scored 6,206 Test match runs with 16 hundreds.
Todd Murphy is expected to be named as the spinner for Australia in place of Lyon. He has taken 22 Test wickets so far, and he has already admitted he expects the England batsman to target him if he plays.
For England, they might finally hand a chance to recognised spinner Shoaib Bashir after being named in the 12-man squad. Bashir has not featured this series and last played a Test match for England in July.
Fast bowler Gus Atkinson picked up a hamstring injury in the fourth Test and he will be replaced by Matthew Potts. Ollie Pope has again been left out of the squad with Jacob Bethell expected to keep his place.
I am backing Australia to win the fifth Test inside three days, and I am backing Khawaja to go out a hero with over 50 runs in his final Test match. When it comes to bowling, I cannot look past Mitchell Starc - he has been sensational during the Ashes series. He has already taken 26 wickets and I am backing him to hit the 30 market in the first innings.
For England, the likes of Ben Stokes and Joe Root will like another big innings, but I am going with Bethell to top score in the first innings for the tourists. he is a young player, who like a lot of England players, does not play with fear.
With the ball, England will be without Jofra Archer and Atkinson. Brydon Carse has taken the most wickets for England, but he has been very expensive. I am backing him to take the most wickets, but he might not necessarily be the best bowler.
