An impressive Denmark side took the lead early and now find themselves in the Semi finals, with three class teams. Our partners 888 sport are 9/1 odds for Denmark to lift the trophy in the outright Euro 2020 Betting Odds.
Below, we’ll run you through this important game played at Baku Stadium on Saturday evening and discuss what lies ahead for Denmark next week.
The game took place at 17:00 BST in Azerbaijan's Baku Olympic Stadium. Referee Bjorn Culpers blows the whistle and Denmark will take the kick off. The game gets off to a fast start but already Denmark's Joakim Mæhle is lying on floor the asking for medical attention. We are yet to learn the extent of the injury but he continues to play and he played part in the second goal for Denmark. It is not long before Denmark secure an early lead, at 5’ Jens Stryger Larsen sends a corner which Thomas Delaney manages to head in from as far back as the penalty spot!
Denmark have led 1-0 at half time in their last three games and this may be something England will consider when the two sides meet on Wednesday at Wembley.
Jens Stryger Larsen continues to remain busy for the team, delivering crosses and corners and Denmark are looking strong. Both Mikkel Damsgaard and Thomas Delaney come close to scoring within minutes of each other. The first real Czech opportunity came at 22’ when Czechs Tomas Holes shot inside the left post, but Danish keeper Schmeichel made a brilliant save.
Ten minutes later and Mikkel Damsgaard is attacking again, but his shot to the left side of goal is well saved by the Czech keeper. It is not long until Denmark find the back of the net again and four minutes later at 42’ Kasper Dolberg meets a perfect cross from Joakim Mæhle to put the Danes two clear before half time!
The Czech Republic got into gear almost immediately in the second half, which was a stark contrast to their first half! Three minutes into the half Euro 2020 hero Patrik Schick had a strike blocked by the Danish defence. This did not stop the Czech hitman, as just a minute later Vladimiir Coufal fed a fine cross into the box where Schick struck it into the inside of the left post. Schick is now joint top goal scorer with Ronaldo, having scored five in the Euro 2020 tournament.
Czech Republic continue with their pressure during the second half, but time was gradually running out and no real great chances came to fruition. The only real threats in the latter half of the game actually came from the Denmark side. Both Poulsen and Tomas Vaclick came close to scoring within minutes of each other.
Six minutes of added time are played and Vladimir Darida, of Czech republic, gets a last chance attempt from a lofted cross, but the Danes defend well and the game ends 1-2.
Denmark will now progress to the Semis where they will meet England at Wembley on 7 July. If you fancy England to win the Euros, they are currently 6/4 favourites with 888 sport.
If Denmark somehow manage to beat England, the 9/1 available for them with 888sport will be a lot shorter and could prove to be value in hindsight! Our Euro 2020 News and Updates will be following this tournament right up until the final, played on 11 July.
