The reigning European Champions are searching for their second piece of silverware under Thomas Tuchel this weekend. The Blues knocked off Spurs in the semi-final, booking themselves a chance at redemption in the EFL Cup final after losing in 2019 to Manchester City.
As for Liverpool, they haven’t prioritised cup competitions since Jurgen Klopp took the reins at Anfield. However, they beat Arsenal over two legs, and now they enter their first EFL Cup final since 2016 when they too were defeated by Manchester City.
Let’s look ahead to this EFL Cup final and see the best bets for the game. All of the odds for this game have been brought to you by Ladbrokes and are correct at the time of writing.
Game: Chelsea vs Liverpool
Competition: EFL Cup Final
Kick-off: 27/02/2022 4.30pm GMT
Venue: Wembley Stadium
Result odds: Chelsea (2/1) | Liverpool (29/20) | Draw (21/10)
After penalty shoot-out scares against both Aston Villa and Southampton in the third and fourth round respectively, Chelsea enjoyed a comfortable route to the final. The Blues beat Brentford away from home in the last eight, before dominating Tottenham over two legs to make the EFL Cup final for the second time in four years.
A catalyst for Chelsea’s success in the latter rounds was their defence. Thomas Tuchel’s men haven’t conceded a goal since their last 16 tie with Southampton, and they are 18/5 to win to nil against Liverpool. Due to Liverpool’s potent attack, we would steer clear of a to nil result, but Chelsea at 2/1 isn’t a bad price.
Liverpool rarely make it to this stage in cup competitions due to Jurgen Klopp’s tendency to play his youngsters. However, the youngsters have done an impressive job, and now Liverpool could be winning a piece of domestic silverware for the first time since 2012. They are 29/20 to win the game - very nice price.
Much like Chelsea, Liverpool had limited problems en route to the EFL Cup final. They dominated both Norwich and Preston North End in the earlier rounds by an aggregate of 5-0, and despite a 3-3 with Leicester, they eased past Arsenal and into the final. Liverpool scoring tendencies means a Liverpool win and over 2.5 goals seems a nice shout at 3/1.
Chelsea has stars all over the pitch. But we have two names to keep an eye on. Moroccan forward Hakim Ziyech has been in inspired form recently, scoring in three-straight Premier League matches. He is 7/2 to score at any time. Besides Ziyech, we would focus on Kai Havertz. The German forward is Chelsea’s go-to man for a crucial goal, and he is also 7/2.
Liverpool’s front three is their key to success. Whether it is Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane, and either Diogo Jota or Luis Diaz, if they are scoring, it is over for Chelsea. We would be silly if we didn’t suggest Mohamed Salah at 7/4, but 14/5 for Luis Diaz could be the slightly better money maker.
01/01/2022 | Stamford Bridge | Chelsea 2 vs 2 Liverpool | Premier League
Chelsea were the favourites when these two sides met in January. The Blues were 33/20 to pick up the three-points, whilst Liverpool were small outsiders at 43/25. Overall, the game finished a draw, and that was settling at around 5/2 with the bookmakers.
These two teams should play out a tight game at Wembley. Both sides have proven that they are stable at the back, whilst proving their attacking integrity with plenty of goals. However, we think Liverpool have a slightly better team, and they are more reliable in 2022 than Chelsea.
Overall, we think Liverpool get the win in the EFL Cup final, and they cash-in at 29/20.
