Not a bad result for us last week, with Cam Smith winning the LIV Golf London event at 9/1 and we also had Mark Hubbard placing in the John Deere at 40/1 which paid handsomely. However, over at the Made In Himmerland (on the DP World Tour) although Marcel Siem placed for us, he tied with seven other players for 10th, which dented the odds significantly.
Moving on to this week, I have another two really good events for you to focus on. On the DP World Tour we have the Scottish Open at the Renaissance Club and on the PGA Tour, we have the Barbasol Championship, which is played at the low-scoring Keene Trace Golf Club.
This week’s events are both very interesting, as a lot of the players from the PGA Tour have come over to contest in the Scottish Open, in preparation for next week’s British Open. That means we have a star-studded line up to work with and I’m dying to see how both events play out with so many of the world’s Top 20 opting to play in the Scottish Open.
Conversely, this truly opens the door to those on the PGA Tour who are trying to find their first win, so that also promises to be an absolute belter. As usual, for this week’s selections I am advise singles and EW cross-doubles, to make the most of our chances.
This week’s odds for my selections are courtesy of William Hill and with eight places available, you might just want to take advantage of this great offer. If you bet £10, you will get £30 in free bets. Which may just help you to cover all of my winning picks for this week.
My first selection for this week’s Scottish Open is world number 10, Jordan Spieth, who has been enjoying a great year on the PGA Tour, and I think he is a perfect fit for this week’s event. It’s quite a long course on paper and Jordan has worked hard on increasing his driving length and accuracy this year, which will really help his already-strong short game heading into this week.
With the British Open coming next week, this is a great warm up, but he may not even need it. He has a death touch around the greens and the Renaissance course will really play into his strengths this week. Jordan is sneaky-long off the tee, he’s already a 13-time winner on the PGA Tour and his confidence has grown again this season, so he’ll be primed for a big effort this week.
Next up I have world number 22 Tommy Fleetwood, who has been on my radar all year and is seeming to find some really decent form again of late. He hasn’t won on the PGA Tour yet, but he’s had five Top 10 finishes and was really unlucky not to get the job done in this year’s Canadian Open, where he lost out to Nick Taylor in a playoff, the latter having made a 72-foot putt to get the job done.
He’s enjoyed good finishes in the Majors and actually played really well when he missed the cut at the Travellers. He is a superb ball striker and his game should really suit the Renaissance Club this week. In fact he has shown plenty of good form this year and now that he has had time to get over his playoff loss in the Canadian, he should be well up for it this week and I think it’s going to be a big one for Tommy.
Shane Lowry is my most interesting selection. He is obviously well-suited to links golf, meaning his style of play makes him a useful addition to the squad here. His short game is going to be particularly valuable for this course and he has had some really good finishes since tying for 12th in this year’s PGA Championship.
He also looked like he was coming good at the Travellers two weeks ago, where he finished at 14 under par. Despite his evident class, that course wouldn’t have really suited his game, but he has since had a couple of weeks off and returned to links golf this week to freshen himself up. He has finished in the Top 20 in all three Majors this year and he looks primed for a big week on Tour. I find it hard to see where it can go wrong for Shane Lowry this week.
My final selection for this week’s Scottish Open is the brilliant Adam Scott, who has one of the best swings in the game. He is a Major winner, has already won 14 times on Tour and is in great form once again this year. He has only missed the one cut this season and that was in the US Open, where he missed out by just the one shot, having not putted well on the first two rounds, but he has been in great form throughout the year.
I wanted a good long iron player in the squad for this week with there being some long par threes on this course, as well as some equally long approaches into some of the par fours and fives, so I think he is tremendous value at 55/1. You will struggle to find many players as consistent as Adam Scott and he has plenty of experience to go with it too.
My number one selection for this week’s Barbasol Championship is world number 113 Taylor Pendrith, who is a player going places this season. He comes into this week in great form, having played well in the Rocket Mortgage Championship, and he had a Top 20 finish at this track last year, so he is a solid selection.
I imagine it will be a week of low scores here and he is number one in the approach department from 150-200 yards for this week, so he ought to go close, provided he continues on his current run of form. Taylor is a very likeable player who has the game to win on Tour and this could be the week for him to break his maiden. Even though his price tag may seem a little short, I think he is really good value at 16/1.
Peter Kuest may only have played 11 events on the PGA Tour, but he is a player that is improving very fast indeed. This low-scoring course should be right up his street and he comes into this event having finished in a tie for fourth in the Rocket Mortgage and then a tie for 17th in the John Deere.
Although he doesn’t have a lot of pre-form to go on, he is a very classy player and one I think will be winning on Tour in the near future. If he had more experience, he would be much nearer to the top of the market for this event and if he can bring the game he has been playing lately here, then he is sure to give us a good run for our money.
World number 514 Kelly Kraft has been close to making my team for the PGA Tour a few times now and this week he definitely makes it into the squad. He has missed plenty of cuts this season, but has been able to shoot some real deep low scores too.
From 50 yards out, all the way to 175 yards, he is right up there in the stats department, but it must be said that his putting has let him down at times. However, I think if he gets on a roll, he is more than able to compete in this field.
In the absence of so many big names for this week’s Barbasol, as the majority are playing in the Scottish Open, I think this is exactly the opportunity Kelly Kraft needs to get himself up at the top end of the leaderboard. On his day he should not be a 125/1 shot and I’ll give him this opportunity to prove me right.
My final selection for the Barbasol is Justin Lower, who finished in a tie for eighth in this event last year and has been a player I’ve enjoyed watching for some time. He comes into this week in great form, following on from an eighth place in the Rocket Mortgage two weeks ago.
He is a real form player, so once he finds some good form, he often rolls with it and his putting stats have been superb this year. He is currently 12th in the strokes gained with a putter, which is an element of the game he has been solid all year and is a must-have for this week.
Not only does he putt well, his approach play is considerably better now than I’ve seen than previous years and there is a lot to like about this 40/1 shot. I thought he would be shorter in the betting considering his course form, so that’s a bonus for us and I expect a bold bid from Justin this week.
