Arguably one of the greatest boxers in the sport’s history will step in the ring once more, going toe-to-toe with YouTube star Logan Paul.
Yes – it’s happening. The five-weight world champion boxer is going to fight a YouTuber-turned-boxer with a professional record of 0-1. The fight was scheduled for February of this year, but was delayed due to the pandemic.
Now, fans will be heading to the Hard Rock Stadium in Florida – home of the Miami Dolphins – on June 6 to watch the exhibition bout.
With a professional boxing record of 50-0, it’s difficult for anyone to argue that Mayweather isn’t the greatest boxer ever. Of course, he’s in the conversation every single time (he has to be) but best ever? Well, that’s for you to decide.
Either way, he’s now fighting in his second exhibition bout after retiring in 2017. His first was just over a year after announcing his professional retirement, and headed to Japan to fight kickboxer and mixed martial artist Tenshin Nasukawa.
For those that remember, ‘Money’ Mayweather knocked him out in the first round – oops. Now, his attention has turned to YouTuber/boxer/social media star – Logan Paul.
Let’s be honest, we’re all thinking it. How did the fight come about? How did it happen? While we don’t know the specifics, we do know that there’s clearly evidence of demand for the exhibition fight to take place.
Logan Paul’s only boxing appearance was a split-decision loss to fellow YouTube star KSI. It was the main event of the night, where a number of YouTubers battled it out in a boxing ring – including Logan Paul’s younger brother, Jake.
Since, Jake has been in the ring twice more, beating ex-NBA player Nate Robinson, and former UFC athlete Ben Askren. Meanwhile, Logan Paul has yet to step foot between the ropes again. That comes to an end in June, when he goes toe-to-toe with Floyd Mayweather in front of a crowd.
As Mayweather confirmed the fight via his Instagram account, his comment also gave us hope that life is heading back to a form of normality. The event is being put on by Mayweather Promotions, and will be shown on Showtime PPV in the US.
In the Instagram caption, Mayweather confirmed the bout: “JUNE 6, 2021!!! #MIAMI. Me and Logan Paul will be fighting at the Hard Rock Stadium. @mayweatherpromotions, @fanmio and @showtimeboxing have come together to bring an epic Event!”.
Then, Mayweather finished his caption with: “Tickets will be going on sale next week…”. So, while we still don’t know how much capacity will be allowed to attend, there will still be some spectators inside the Hard Rock Stadium.
We know no one is legally allowed to knock out their opponent, but it still may happen. It’s a world champion, only a few years into retirement, against a boxer who’s only had one fight – and lost.
