The reigning European Champions enjoyed a seamless Champions League group stage. Despite finishing second, they were rarely troubled by either Zenit St. Petersburg or Malmo in group D.
As for Lille, they have gone a long way to rectifying their abysmal 2019 Champions League. In 2019, they fell to Chelsea twice in the group stage, finishing the group on a sole point. Whereas in 2022, the French Champions won three-straight group games to finish atop group G.
Let’s look ahead to this Champions League first leg and see the best bets for the game. All of the odds for this game have been brought to you by Ladbrokes and are correct at the time of writing.
Game: Chelsea vs LOSC Lille
Competition: Champions League - Round of 16
Kick-off: 22/02/2022 8.00pm GMT
Venue: Stamford Bridge
Result odds: Chelsea (4/11) | LOSC Lille (8/1) | Draw (19/5)
Chelsea have been enjoying a successful Champions League title defence in 2022. They comfortably finished second behind Juventus in their group, securing a tie with Lille in the round of 16. They are definite favourites for the opening leg against the French champions at 4/11, but they’re a safe bet.
A catalyst for Chelsea’s success in the group stage was their defence. Thomas Tuchel’s men only conceded four goals in the entirety of the group stage - three on the final matchday to Zenit. Therefore, taking Chelsea to win the first leg to nil at 6/5 seems a smart choice.
After surprising everybody by winning Ligue 1 in 2021, the French champions have continued their good form with European success. Jocelyn Gourvennec’s side topped group G ahead of Sevilla, Wolfsburg and RB Salzburg to face Chelsea in the last 16. They’re a huge 8/1 to win the first leg, and 19/5 to tie at Stamford Bridge.
Much like Chelsea, Lille’s defence was a huge reason for topping their group. Only Bayern Munich and Real Madrid conceded less goals in the group stage than Lille, so this is where our bets would go. Ladbrokes are offering a great #GetAPrice for both teams with Under 1.5 goals in the first half, Under 2.5 goals in the second half and Either team to win at 11/8.
We have lauded Chelsea’s defensive performances in the Champions League group stage, but they’ll have to rely on Romelu Lukaku and Timo Werner in the attacking third. Werner is Chelsea’s top scorer in the Champions League (3), but it is likely Lukaku gets the start next week.
On the Lille side, Jonathan David has become an integral part of their attacking success. The Canadian international has led his nation to top of their World Cup qualifying group, whilst at club level he is Lille’s top scorer in both Europe and France.
10/12/2019 | Stamford Bridge | Chelsea 2 vs 1 LOSC Lille | Champions League Group Stage
The Milwaukee Bucks came out on top against LOSC Lille when these sides met in 2019. Lille sat rock bottom of the group, and Chelsea were clear favourites in both ties (22/25 away and 11/50 at home), but they cashed in nonetheless.
These two teams should play out a tight first leg at Stamford Bridge. Lille have proven they can withstand potent attacks such as Sevilla, Salzburg, and Wolfsburg, but we think Chelsea have too much. The Blues won three-straight home games by an aggregate of 9-0, and that form won’t stop when they meet Lille.
Overall, we think Chelsea get the win in the first leg over Lille, and they cash-in as 4/11 favourites.
