Chelsea the great entertainers

Under the tutelage of Xabi Alonso, Chelsea have been in free-scoring mode. Across their opening two league games, Chelsea have notched up seven goals. A 3-2 victory away to West London rivals Fulham was followed up by a pulsating 4-3 win at home to Brighton, and they are fourth in the table.

Chelsea’s attacking prowess has been striking, and they are currently leading the way with the Seagulls in the scoring charts. Of course, the lack of European football this season means the Blues should be feeling fresher, and they have sent out a statement of intent to their rivals.

Popcorn at the ready

Regarded as one of the game’s brightest managers, Alonso has stuck to his guns. He utilised a 3-4-1-2 formation against Fulham and Brighton, and it paid dividends as he got the most out of his deadly attacking trident consisting of Morgan Rogers, Cole Palmer, and Joao Pedro.

Even though there is a wealth of attacking talent at his disposal, it seems it will take time for his team to adjust defensively, having already shipped five goals. Nevertheless, Bet365’s football trading expert, Steve Freeth, has been impressed with what he’s seen so far from the Blues.

He said:

“I haven’t exactly rushed to watch Chelsea matches over the last year or so, but I had the popcorn ready this weekend after their showing at Fulham in their first Premier League outing under Xabi Alonso, and I wasn’t disappointed.

“That mouth-watering front three of Pedro, Palmer, and Rogers will cause carnage this season, and we’re 33/1 about the Stamford Bridge side breaking the record for the most goals scored in a Premier League season, currently held by Manchester City, who bagged 106 in the 2017/18 campaign.”

A busy summer window

As per usual, Chelsea were extremely active during the summer transfer window. No fewer than 10 new players arrived, including the £117 million acquisition of Rogers from Aston Villa, while deals for Danny Welbeck and Jordan Henderson were surprise purchases.

On deadline day, meanwhile, a move for Monaco midfielder Lamine Camara collapsed, but there was one high-profile departure in the form of Enzo Fernandez. The Argentine, who asked to be excluded from the matchday squad for the Brighton game, headed to the Etihad for a joint-British transfer record of £125 million.
Recalling past achievements

In terms of past Premier League achievements, Chelsea were the first side to breach the 100-goal milestone in 2009/10, chipping in with 103 goals. In that season, they scored the most goals at home (68), and before that, they still hold the honour of conceding the fewest goals (15) in 2004/05, which came during the Jose Mourinho era.

Of course, it will take something special for Chelsea to smash the existing goals record. There are stiffer tests to come, but the early signs of the Alonso project have been encouraging.
