Arsenal have been offered an intriguing price to miss out on the Premier League again this season. A cursory glance at the outrights section at Unibet, one of the best UK betting sites, indicates the Gunners are currently trading at 6/1 to fall short again in their bid to win the title.
As things stand, Arsenal hold a healthy advantage at the top of the table with a nine-point cushion. With the league on pause due to an international break, Arsenal will have had time to reset before the final push.
Over the years, Arsenal have spurned several presentable opportunities to end their long title drought, extending more than two decades. For the past three successive seasons, they have been involved in title races, but on each occasion, they have finished runners-up.
Only a few weeks ago, Mikel Arteta’s charges were fighting on all four fronts, and they were talked up for claiming an unprecedented quadruple. Unfortunately, the Gunners have earned the moniker of being “chokers”, as they have often fallen short and dropped crucial points in the run-in.
Apart from holding a nine-point lead over Manchester City, the Gunners have only conceded 22 times, and boast a better goal difference than their rivals. More disconcertingly, Arsenal have been nicknamed “Set Piece FC”, scoring more goals (22) than any other side from dead-ball situations, four more than Manchester United (19), who are second on the list, warranting some criticism.
In the business end of the campaign, small margins can often make a telling difference. Arsenal were dealt a setback in the Carabao Cup Final last month as they were handed a 2-0 defeat against City, with Nico O’Reilly netting with two quick-fire second-half goals.
Perhaps the pain of a Wembley defeat could drive the North London outfit to league glory. But Arsenal legend Martin Keown recently drew comparisons with the 1998/99 campaign, the year in which Manchester United scooped the treble when they trousered the Premier League, FA Cup, and Champions League.
Outlining the situation, Keown said:
“We’ve seen it in the past. I remember being involved in 1999 when Manchester United beat us in that epic semi-final, and they went on and won all before them.
“We didn’t fall off a cliff by any means; we only lost the league by a point and there was a lot of resolve there. But it could give you that extra energy that finally you’ve been rewarded as winners. That is when the going gets tough, and you start to perform.”
Manchester City have been the dominant force in English football, clinching the title on six of the previous eight occasions. Although their tussles with Liverpool were titanic, Arsenal have emerged as credible title contenders.
Pep Guardiola’s men have relished the role of chasers, and they have overturned some big deficits in the past. In the 2018/19 season, for example, City trailed Liverpool by 10 points at the end of December, and they won 18 of their last 19 league matches to get over the line.
Arsenal will also be mindful of City’s record after the international break, and last season, City won two and drew one of their first three games after the league resumed.
While Arsenal are still involved in three competitions, BetMGM, which offers some of the finest football betting odds, has posted a price of 10/1 for the Gunners to finish the campaign trophyless.
