Arsenal have seen their odds to regain the Premier League shortened further with BetMGM. The Gunners, who ended their 22-year curse to lift the title last term, were available at 5/4 with the UK bookmaker before the start of the campaign.
But Mikel Arteta’s charges are now attracting a very short price of 8/25 with BetMGM. And it seems interest in Liverpool and Manchester City appears to be fading, as they are now priced at 14/1 and 7/1 respectively.
Despite an unforgettable performance in midweek which saw Arsenal dumped out of the Carabao Cup by League Two outfit Fleetwood Town, the Gunners picked themselves up off the canvas away to Liverpool on Sunday. Trips to Anfield in the past had been chastening for the Gunners, but they came away with a priceless 1-0 victory.
The win, courtesy of a first-half Kai Havertz strike, sent Arsenal to the summit of the table, and it was an immaculate display. Although they were bereft of Bukayo Saka through injury, Arteta’s side ended a 14-year wait to taste victory on the red half of Merseyside to usurp City at the top of the table.
Clearly, the wind is in Arsenal’s sails. Only in 2004/05 and 2007/08 have Arsenal had more points at this stage of a campaign, while their current haul of 24 is two points better off than the 22 they had in their account at this point last term en route to the title, which bodes well.
Discussing the significance of the win over Liverpool, Arteta said:
“I’m extremely proud; this is something you want to accomplish. That’s the challenge and mission you want to accomplish. I love it when it’s something we have not done for many years.”
Enzo Maresca started his City reign in spectacular style with seven wins from seven, however, the wheels have come off in recent weeks. A 2-1 defeat away to Aston Villa was followed last weekend by a 1-0 reverse at home to Brighton.
Their defensive problems have been laid bare as they’ve conceded 10 goals — double the amount Arsenal have let in. Individual errors have been stacking up, and City have only kept one clean sheet in their past eight games in all competitions.
Following in Pep Guardiola’s footsteps was always going to be a tough order. And perhaps it’s no surprise that City, who were chalked up at 7/2 to lift the title before the start of the campaign, have drifted with BetMGM.
Even though Andoni Iraola may have had a strong case for Liverpool to be awarded a penalty against Arsenal, they are still trying to find the answers in the league. If anything, they have found going considerably easier in the Champions League this term, and it will take time for things to come together.
Their underlying problem has been their struggle to score in the league. With just 11 to their name this term from nine games, that represents a paltry return, and they are nine points off the pace.
Brighton has been the undoubted surprise package of the term. Currently third, they have already picked off City and Arsenal, and BetMGM have chalked up odds of 12/1 for the Seagulls in the outright market. They have exceeded expectations under Fabian Hurzeler, and perhaps a cat could be thrown amongst the pigeons.
