Premier League title contenders Arsenal will be hoping to make it back-to-back wins as Leeds United travel south to London this weekend. Mikel Arteta’s side picked up all three points - and a clean sheet - against Man United at Old Trafford, while Leeds achieved the same vs Everton.
Arsenal’s 1-0 win against Manchester United at Old Trafford wasn’t a classic - and neither was the performance - but a win is a win and that’s all Mikel Arteta will care about. The Spaniard will know his team will need to step it up if they are to knock Liverpool off their perch, but three points a clean sheet is always pleasing in the Premier League - especially against your rivals.
The Gunners have invested heavily as they look to get closer to the title this time round. And while certain fans are skeptical of Viktor Gyokeres from his early impressions, there’s enough quality within this team to go close - especially if they prove difficult to beat at home.
Leeds started their return to the Premier League with a 1-0 win against Everton at Elland Road. An 84th minute penalty was enough to edge past the Toffees and send the fans home happy. However, despite dominating, Leeds lacked a real cutting edge in front of goal.
Only three of their 21 shots hit the target - including the penalty - and there is a worry if they have enough to stay up come May. However, a positive was their clean sheet. Everton didn’t turn up, but Leeds set up well defensively - and three points, at home, was the perfect start.
However, a trip to the capital will demand a much better performance.
Arsenal and Leeds have shared some iconic Premier League matches over the years. However, the last five meetings have all gone to Arsenal, and you have to go all the way back to 2003 the last time Leeds beat them in any competition.
The last time these two locked horns at the Emirates was back in 2023 - where Arsenal ran out 4-1 winners thanks to a brace from Gabriel Jesus, as well as goals from former Leeds player Ben White and now Sunderland captain Granit Xhaka.
While Arsenal’s performance against Man United left a lot to be desired, they return home for the opening day of the season against a side that may well struggle for goals this campaign. Let’s look at the Premier League betting odds.
Last season, despite only having the 5th best home form in the Premier League, only Liverpool and Nottingham Forest conceded less than Arsenal in front of their own fans. A win and clean sheet at Old Trafford will have boosted their confidence - and the return to the Emirates this weekend should bring about a much stronger performance.
Arsenal should dominate the midfield battle. A trio of Declan Rice, Martin Zubimendi and Martin Odegaard is certainly capable of passing their way through any side - and it could be a long afternoon for the visitors chasing it.
The hosts defence is settled, too, and how Leeds get through Gabriel and William Saliba is almost an impossible question to answer based on their performance vs Everton.
Do Leeds have enough quality in the final third to challenge a title contender in their own back yard? The answer - based on what we have seen in the opening week - is no. But this result certainly won’t define their season - but it could do for the hosts.
If Arsenal are going to win the Premier League, these are the sort of games they must dominate and win with ease.
