After 11 great years at Leicester City, Kasper Schmeichel has moved on. The sale of the Danish number one was completed this summer and sees Schemichel join Ligue 1 title contenders, OGC Nice.
Over the last 11 years, Kasper Schmeichel and Leicester City have achieved the impossible. After playing a major part in the Championship-winning side of 2013-14, Schmeichel took to life in the Premier League incredibly well before highlighting his true ability in that unforgettable 2015-16 season - a season that UK bookmakers would rather forget!
Throughout the 38-game season, Schmeichel let in just 36 goals, missing out on the golden glove by one. His superb performances between the sticks also helped the Blue Army finish the season with just 3 losses to their name.
A great stint in Europe followed for the Foxes, defying the latest odds and allowing Schmeichel to showcase his talent once more across the elite club scene. Of course, the big stage wasn’t completely new to Schmeichel, who had already donned the #1 jersey for Denmark by this point. Currently, Nice’s newest addition boasts 84 international caps. The following years would see Kasper add the FA Cup and Community Shield to his already-impressive resume, too.
Unfortunately, over the last couple of years, we have witnessed City and Schmeichel’s form hit a bump in the road. Unsurprisingly, this bump has led to Schmeichel searching for a taste of elite-level football once more - something he was unlikely to see again for a while at Leicester City.
Ramsey, Viti, and Beka Beka join Schmeichel at Nice for the 22/23 season - signings that show OGC Nice has real intent to top their 5th place finish of last year.
Although Les Aiglons finished on a high, winning four out of their five last league games, they are yet to replicate that same form this time around. Currently, they sit in 12th position with two points from two games against newly-promoted Toulouse and a Strasbourg side that finished 6th last year.
Unfortunately for Nice, fellow title-contenders, Marseille and Monaco, have already secured wins, leaving them in second and fifth place, respectively. PSG also appear to be scoring for fun already, netting 10 times in 2 matches, cementing their place as favourites to win the league, according to the best bookmakers for football.
On paper, and based on recent performances, we can’t see Schmeichel adding to his league winner’s medal collection any time soon. However, despite a less than ideal start, Schmeichel will get to taste European football this season - albeit, in the form of the Europa Conference League!
What do you guys think? Will Schmeichel be able to add to his league winner’s medal tally at OGC Nice? Let us know in the comments.
