Matchday 8 is the final round of the UEFA Champions League’s league phase, with all fixtures played on Wednesday, 28 January.
Teams finishing in the top eight will qualify directly for the last 16, while those placed ninth to 24th move into the play-offs. Anyone outside those positions is eliminated.
Champions League tipster Ben Smith has put together a five-leg accumulator for this round on Betway, based on what he sees as value in the latest Champions League odds.
Eintracht Frankfurt have been one of the most open sides in Europe this season, but that approach has started to cost them.
They have conceded three goals in each of their last five matches. Earlier in the campaign, they were still picking up wins despite shipping plenty, for example, the 6-4 success at Borussia Mönchengladbach and the 4-3 triumph at Cologne.
But results have since tailed off, and points have become harder to come by. As a result, Frankfurt are now out of contention for the Champions League play-offs.
Tottenham Hotspur, meanwhile, can secure a place in the last 16 with a win in Germany. Like Frankfurt, they have been involved in several high-scoring matches recently. Their last two away games brought a 2-2 draw at Burnley and a 3-2 defeat at Bournemouth, with both teams scoring in the second half in each match.
With neither side looking settled defensively, both teams to score in the second half looks a sensible angle again here.
Arsenal are in the middle of a Premier League wobble, with Sunday’s 3-2 defeat to Manchester United giving encouragement to Manchester City and Aston Villa, both of whom have dropped points themselves in recent weeks.
The Gunners face a difficult trip to Leeds United at the weekend, so some rotation is likely here with qualification already being secured. However, Mikel Arteta is more likely to manage minutes carefully than change his side completely.
Arsenal will want the game wrapped up as soon as possible, allowing key players to avoid playing the full 90. Kairat Almaty have suffered heavy defeats in this competition, and if they fall behind early, the scoreline could quickly run away from them.
The Premier League leaders have been ruthless at home in Europe, beating Bayern Munich and Atletico Madrid comfortably, and they should have too much here from the outset.
Both Paris Saint-Germain and Newcastle United sit on 13 points heading into Matchday 8. They are two of eight teams locked on that total, occupying positions six through to 13.
Newcastle, who were uninspiring against Aston Villa on Sunday, could hardly have asked for a tougher fixture as they look to secure a place in the last 16. PSG have won 10 of their 13 home matches in all competitions this season. They have won the second half in all three of their home Champions League games, as well as in eight of their nine Ligue 1 fixtures at the Parc des Princes.
With PSG being short enough in the match odds, backing them to win the second half at a surprisingly backable price makes more sense here.
Only a win will do for Benfica if they are to have any chance of finishing inside the top 24 and claiming a place in the play-offs.
That should force a more attacking approach than usual, even if it goes against how José Mourinho typically sets up his sides. Benfica cannot afford to sit back here.
Real Madrid are also chasing a result. Victory would secure a top-eight finish, while a draw would leave them relying on scores elsewhere.
With both teams needing to push for three points, this game sets up for goals, making over 3.5 a reasonable play.
Bayern Munich have been delivering plenty of goals on their travels, scoring at least three times in five consecutive away matches in all competitions following their Champions League defeat to Arsenal earlier in the group stage.
Although their place in the last 16 is already confirmed ahead of Matchday 8, Bayern still arrive with something to prove after being beaten at home for the first time this season. A 2-1 loss to Augsburg brought an end to a five-game winning run, and a response is expected.
With Vincent Kompany unlikely to risk another defeat through heavy rotation, Bayern should name a strong side and take all three points against inferior opposition.
