Do UK Bookmakers Overreact To Recent Form In The EFL?

Form is always going to be one of the biggest factors when looking at betting on the EFL. If a team has won four or five games in a row, they are naturally going to be a shorter price. However, recent form can sometimes have too much of an impact on odds.

A team might be on a good winning run, but that doesn't necessarily mean they have suddenly become one of the best sides in the League. The same applies to a team that has lost four or five matches in a row. Researching in-depth statistics can help you find better value.

Look at More Than Recent Results

One of the easiest mistakes to make when betting on football is just looking at a team's last five results. This is because there's multiple factors which have to be considered. For example, who did those wins come against? Were they home or away?

A team could have won four games against sides at the bottom of the table before facing promotion favourites. Their recent form might make them look like a good bet, but the standard of opposition they have faced has to be taken into account.

Bookmakers Can Shorten In Form Teams

When a team starts putting together a good run, you will often see their odds get shorter. There is a reason for that. A side winning regularly will gain more money from punters. However, the problem comes when the price is too short. If a team is 4/5, then you have to decide whether they have a strong enough chance of winning.

Sometimes teams can justify the prices, but recent form might have resulted in them being shorter than they should be.

Consider The Opposition

Strength of opposition is something I always think is important when looking at EFL form. There can be a big difference between overcoming a team in the relegation zone compared to a team aiming for the top six. It's particularly important early in the season when the table hasn't fully formed. The upcoming fixtures can be just as important as matches early into the season.

Home and Away Form

I personally look at home and away form when studying matches. Multiple times you can see some EFL teams completely different away from home. A team might have won three of their previous four matches, but if three of those games were at home, their overall form isn't accurate.

If their next fixture is at home, then I wouldn't be too concerned about the away results. Instead of just looking at the last five games, I prefer to separate home and away form where possible.

I think a good example from last season is Birmingham City. The Blues were among the Championship's top four sides at home, but their away record was one of the four worst in the league.

Fixture Congestion Can mpact Results

In the EFL, there can be a high amount of fixtures. Teams can have two matches a week, which includes the league and cup. This can have a big impact on form. A team with a smaller squad might struggle when playing multiple times in a week, while another side could have enough depth to rotate several players without losing too much quality.

Injuries and suspensions are also important. For example, if a team has been struggling without their main striker or a couple of important defenders, their recent form might not be as relevant when those players return. This is another reason why researching wins and losses isn't enough.

Here's an example of player availability. Walsall won 17 league games with Nathan Lowe in their squad during 2024/25 but managed just four wins after the striker returned to Stoke City.

Poor Form Can Create Betting Value

I think teams in poor form can sometimes be more interesting from a betting point of view. Nobody wants to back a team that has lost four matches in a row. However, that poor run can sometimes offer bigger odds. For example, if a team has been losing close matches against good sides, there could be an opportunity when they face an easier opponent.

Consider More Than The Form Table Before Betting

Overall, recent form is important when betting on the EFL, but the best football tipsters look at much more than that. Winning runs can sometimes result in teams becoming too short in the betting, while losing runs can create bigger prices on teams that aren't playing badly.

Looking at the opposition, home and away records, injuries, fixture congestion and the performances behind the results can give you a much better idea of where the value might be, so watching more football can be a huge advantage as a punter.
