EFL LEAGUE ONE 2026/27 BETTING PREVIEW | BEST BETS & PREDICTIONS

Lincoln’s League One campaign was unbelievable. The Imps broke the 100-point barrier, which no one saw coming. Many were surprised to see Lincoln win four of their first five league matches, and I personally thought they couldn’t maintain it. The Imps went on to win the league, and not many expected this; they were priced at 25/1 to win the title.

Cardiff led the league for parts of the season, but they finished second, so the Bluebirds also secured promotion to the Championship. They were one of the most consistent teams in the league, combining a strong home record with solid youth talent to secure promotion.

The 2025/26 League One playoffs included Stockport, Bradford, Bolton, and Stevenage. Stockport and Bolton came through the semi-finals to set up the final at Wembley, where Bolton produced a dominant display to overcome Stockport 4-1; Rúben Rodrigues scored a brace.

The four teams which went down included Northampton, Rotherham, Port Vale, and Exeter. The Cobblers finished rock bottom with just 35 points and nine wins. They were unable to secure a point from their last five league matches. Exeter had multiple opportunities to stay up, but the Grecians were unable to secure a win in their last four.

When looking ahead to next season, I think Leicester City will win the league comfortably. Despite last season's disappointment, Leicester still has one of the strongest squads in the division. If they can rediscover some consistency, they should have more than enough quality to bounce straight back to the Championship.

Although Leicester has lost several experienced players since relegation, I don't think it will stop them from challenging for the title. Ricardo Pereira, Jordan Ayew, Patson Daka, Jamaal Lascelles, Wanya Marcal and Bilal El Khannouss have all moved on this summer.

Betting Tip: Leicester City to win the league – 11/5 - BetMGM

Another team I think will be in the title race but could just fall short is Luton; I think the Hatters will go up via automatic promotion. Last season didn't go to plan for Luton, but there were plenty of positives to take from the way they ended the campaign. A strong run of results almost earned them a place in the play-offs, giving supporters real optimism heading into the new season. Jack Wilshere also grew into the role after taking charge, and his side looked far more organised and confident towards the end. I expect that progress to continue.

Betting Tip: Luton to gain promotion

Sheffield Wednesday should be among the promotion contenders this season after making a number of encouraging additions during the summer. With so many changes to the squad, they may not hit top form immediately, but there's enough quality in the squad to challenge throughout the campaign. I expect the Owls to finish inside the top six and back them to earn promotion by winning the play-offs.

Betting Tip: Sheffield Wednesday to gain promotion

After falling short in the play-off final, Stockport will be desperate to put things right this season. They have been consistent under Dave Challinor and should once again be competing near the top of the table. Although they don't quite make my promotion picks, I think they'll be one of the sides pushing for a top six finish.

While the promotion race grabs most of the headlines, the fight for survival is just as important. Several clubs enter the season with limited expectations, and I think the relegation market offers some interesting betting angles. These are the teams I believe could struggle most.

Burton are one of my strongest relegation picks heading into the new season. Their squad looks weaker than many of the teams they'll be competing against, and I think they'll find it difficult to pick up enough points. Matthew Dennis is a solid signing, but I don't believe one addition is enough to change my view. For me, Burton will go down.

The Brewers spent much of the 2025/26 season battling at the wrong end of the League One table before eventually securing safety with a few games to spare. They finished 17th on 54 points, but it was another campaign of uncertainty rather than pushing up the table. Gary Bowyer kept the Brewers in the division, though they rarely looked convincing.

Betting Tip: Burton to get relegated

The second team I'm tipping for relegation is Wimbledon. I feel they overachieved spells last season and may struggle to repeat that level this time around. Their squad doesn't look particularly strong compared to others in the division, and the transfer window hasn't filled me with confidence.

Betting Tip: Wimbledon to get relegated

Bromley deserves plenty of credit for reaching League One, but I don't think they'll be able to avoid an immediate return to League Two. There are some interesting additions to the squad, although many still have something to prove, and I feel they're lacking the overall depth needed for such a demanding league. They'll make life difficult for plenty of teams, but I expect them to fall short in the fight for safety.

Few players had a bigger impact in front of goal than Ballard last season. He made the difference for Leyton Orient, delivering goals on a consistent basis despite the club spending much of the campaign near the bottom of the table.

Rather than relying on high chance creation from players around him, Ballard regularly made things happen himself. That ability to convert opportunities separated him from most other forwards in the league.

Repeating such an impressive return is never straightforward, but remaining in League One gives him another opportunity to build on last season's success. If he can maintain a similar level of consistency, I thinkhe’ll become the league’s top goal scorer.

Betting Tip: Dom Ballard to become the league’s top goal scorer - 5/1 - BetMGM

If you're searching for a bigger-priced selection, Emre Tezgel is the name that catches my eye. The young striker has already shown he's capable of finding the net, and this move gives him the chance to prove himself.

He joined Wycombe on loan from Stoke. If he settles quickly and becomes their first-choice striker, his current 33/1 price could look generous by the end of the campaign.

Betting Tip: Emre Tezgel to become the league’s top goal scorer - 33/1 - BetMGM
