How Tottenham’s Poor Start Has Impacted Their Betting Odds

After just about avoiding relegation to the Championship over the past two seasons, more was expected of Spurs ahead of the 2026/27 Premier League campaign.

Alongside a new head coach, an entirely different outcome this time round was widely anticipated.

Yet despite Tottenham opening up as one of the favourites to finish inside the top six, Roberto De Zerbi’s side have lost their opening two Premier League matches against Brentford and Newcastle, conceding five in the process. And to make matters worse, they are yet to score.

Should you back Spurs to finish in the top six or be relegated?

After just 180 minutes of action, Spurs have moved from 10/11 to 5/2 with BetMGM to finish inside the top six.

It might be a case of the new signings settling in and De Zerbi still piecing the puzzle together, but both performances this season merely reflect the kind Spurs have produced over the last two seasons.

For now, betting odds of 12/1 on Spurs to be relegated can be seen as a slight overreaction. The scars from the last two seasons are still evident, but in time, they should fade. Spurs have signed too much quality to be dragged into the bottom three - and if anything, the top six drift to 5/2 could be a big price considering they were odds on two weeks ago.

Brentford had the 9th best home record last season, while Newcastle appear to be adapting well under their new head coach. This isn’t an excuse, nor a lazy bet to back Spurs to bounce back, but if De Zerbi starts to make changes to his defence, there’s likely to be some value in that price.

His back line for both games can’t continue. A lack of pace was evident and Micky van de Ven’s inability to win headers will cost Spurs points this season, and so the Italian will need to find a new way to keep clean sheets moving forward.

This is the Premier League and it’s played with pace - something Andy Robertson, van de Ven and van Hecke lack. Without someone more mobile in the heart of the defence, Spurs will struggle to pick up points.

And so it might be worthwhile waiting to see if Tottenham make any more moves in the transfer window, or how De Zerbi approaches the next match vs Nottingham Forest. If he’s willing to make changes, the top six dream could be back on. If he doesn’t, that 12/1 for relegation will only get shorter.

This is, without doubt, one of the toughest Premier League campaigns in recent years, and it’s going to be defined by fine margins.

However, a price I wouldn’t be rushing to back is for Spurs to achieve a top four finish at 5/1. Arsenal, Man City, Chelsea and Liverpool look a lot stronger than what De Zerbi’s side has to offer this season, and all four could create a gap between themselves and the rest of the pack.

It’s not quite panic stations yet for Spurs. Of course, they need to start picking up points, and their front line needs to step it up. But it’s not as though they have played - and lost - to two newly promoted sides in their opening games.

Yes, Spurs haven’t shown anything to support them thus far, but that sometimes creates an opportunity that no one else can see. If De Zerbi is willing to tinker his starting XI, and if Savinho and Marmoush click, they won’t be bottom of the table for long.
