Louie Truman looks at whether League One is the best EFL league for goals betting, and how you can use goals statistics and the football betting odds to potentially find value in markets such as Both Teams to Score and Over 2.5 Goals.
Goals have been a regular feature in League One during the early stages of the season. A number of teams have been involved in high-scoring matches, which naturally makes goals market a good option.
However, producing plenty of goals doesn't automatically mean it is the best league to bet on. The odds available are just as important.
League One has produced a high number of goals this season. During last season, the goals weren't particularly high. Across the season, matches averaged 2.62 goals per game, while 51% finished with Over 2.5 goals.
However, we've seen an improvement during the current campaign. In the opening weeks, matches have averaged 3.08 goals per 90, with 219 goals already scored. Over 2.5 Goals has landed in 61% of matches, while Both Teams to Score has landed in around 63% of matches.
There has also been an increase in matches, producing four or more goals. Over 3.5 Goals landed in around 28% of League One matches last season, compared with 37% during the opening weeks of 2026/27.
Some teams have played a major part in the increase in goals this season.
Oxford United have seen Over 2.5 Goals land in all five of their opening League One matches, while Cambridge United have seen the market land in five of their first six. Both Teams to Score has also landed in all six of Cambridge's league matches.
Stockport County are another team that stands out. Their opening six League One matches have produced 26 goals, an average of 4.33 per game. Stockport scored 16 while conceding 10.
Five of Stockport's opening six matches have also gone Over 2.5 Goals, including a 5-1 win against Wycombe and a 4-3 defeat against Leicester. These are still early numbers, but they show how some teams have contributed to League One's high-scoring start this season.
Over 2.5 Goals isn't the only market worth looking at. Both Teams to Score can be great when teams are scoring regularly but struggling to keep clean sheets. Cambridge United is a good example this season. Both Teams to Score have landed in all six of their opening League One games, with Cambridge scoring 11 goals and conceding nine.
You shouldn't just look at the previous results. The opposition, home and away form and the number of chances teams are creating can all be important when looking at the BTTS market.
Previous results can be good when looking at goals betting, but they don't always tell the full story. A match finishing 3-2 might suggest it was an open game with plenty of chances.
However, penalties, red cards or late goals can completely change a match and make the final score slightly misleading.
Looking at statistics such as shots, shots on target and expected goals can provide more information about how many chances a team is actually creating and conceding.
This can help you decide whether a run of high-scoring matches is likely to continue or whether the results could be difficult to maintain.
Bookmakers will also be aware of teams that have regularly been involved in high-scoring matches.
If Over 2.5 Goals has landed in five or six consecutive matches, the odds on it happening again could become shorter. You need to decide whether there is still enough value in the price available.
For example, Oxford United seeing Over 2.5 Goals in each of their opening five League One matches is an interesting trend. However, simply backing the same market every week doesn't guarantee a profit.
The price is always important. A bet can have a good chance of winning without necessarily representing good value.
Comparing the odds available across different bookmakers can also be important when betting on goals markets.
Two bookmakers may offer different prices for the same Over 2.5 Goals or Both Teams to Score selection. The difference might only look small, but regularly taking a better price can make a difference over the course of a season.
League One is averaging considerably more goals per game than it did during 2025/26. However, it is still too early to say whether League One will be the best EFL division for goals betting this season. The current season is based on a relatively small number of matches, and these numbers could change as more games are played.
League One is certainly worth following for goals this season, but researching each fixture individually, reading the latest football betting tips, and comparing the odds available remains important.
