For a side that finished 10th last season, talks of a relegation battle this year could seem unjust. However, when you take a closer look at the facts, things don’t look all too great for the Wanderers going forward.
The tail end of last season saw Wolves lose five out of their final seven games, only managing to scrape draws in the other two. Wanderers also only managed to net 38 times in 38 games last year - the worst across the Premier League, bar those who were relegated. Defensively speaking, Wolves were fairly impressive and only let in 43 throughout the campaign; although, if the opening performance of Jose Sa is anything to go by, we’d suggest taking a closer look at some footie odds across the over 2.5 goals market!
Unfortunately for the fans, Wolves terrible Premier League form continued on the opening day of the 22/23 season, meaning they are yet to record a win in 8 Premier League matches. Things started promising against an out-of-sorts Leeds United last Saturday, leading to the deadlock being broken at Elland Road in just 6 minutes. A well-worked Daniel Prodence goal got the visitors up and running; however, despite creating more chances and having considerably greater possession, defensive errors saw Wolves leave as 2-1 losers.
As we have already briefly touched on, Sa’s performance on Saturday could only be described as poor. Within the first few minutes, a penalty should have been given after Sa mistimed a cross completely and clattered Kristensen. Soon after, Leeds United scored their first goal - a strike that slipped under Sa’s hand at the near post. Next, Sa attempted to play the ball out of his own six-yard box, only to be closed down and forced to play a wayward pass directly to the opposition. Then, Sa looked to be in no-man's-land when Wolves defender, Rodrigo Ait-Nouri, put it into his own net. Need we continue? Embarrassingly enough, we could!
Last season, Wolves relied heavily on their backline to make up for their lack of consistency up top. If that is already crumbling at Elland Road, we would expect UK bookmakers to begin considering Wolves as legitimate relegation candidates before they've even made a trip to the likes of Anfield and Stamford Bridge.
Next up, Wolves welcome Premier League newcomers, Fulham, to Molineaux - a side with an in-form Mitrovic and plenty of flair and pace on the counter-attack. With Jimenez, last season’s top scorer (6), still out of action for the home side, it may be worth hunting down the best betting odds backing The Cottagers this weekend!
