Man City kickstart their Champions League campaign on home soil against Napoli. Pep Guardiola's side are one of the favourites to lift the trophy come May, although their opponents have made a strong start in Serie A. Nathan Joyes takes a closer look at this mouthwatering tie and provides his best bet and insight.
After suffering back-to-back defeats against Tottenham and Brighton, Man City bounced back with a convincing home win against arch-rivals Man United. Although the result was expected, Guardiola knew his team couldn't afford to lose three matches in a row - and we saw first hand how that ruined them last season.
And while there was a lot to like about their win, they can't afford to take their foot of the gas against a strong Napoli side. The good news for the hosts is that they have no fresh injury concerns to worry about after that particular clash.
However, John Stone, Omar Marmoush and new signing Rayan Cherki remain on the treatment table, leaving Pep a little short at this stage of the season.
Having opened their Serie A campaign with three straight wins, there's plenty to like about Napoli - and the Italians will be confident they can disrupt Man City at the Etihad on Thursday evening.
Wins over Sassuolo, Cagliari and Fiorentina has put Antonio Conte's team top of the table in the early stages of the season - but many are convinced they are the real deal.
Kevin de Bruyne will return after almost a decade with Man City, who scored last time out against Fiorentina, and he may just have a point to prove that his former employer shouldn't have let him go. Alongside him, former Man United midfielder Scott McTominay has become a fan favourite.
Alongside fellow Man United loanee Rasmus Hojlund, who also scored against Fiorentina, there's plenty of incentive to go and win the match in round one.
These two sides haven't clashed since 2017, where Man City ran out comfortable 4-2 and 2-1 winners in the old format group stage in this very competition. John Stones scored in that 4-2 win and is the only player to remain at the club who was involved in that match.
With both clubs heading into this contest scoring plenty last time out, Nathan Joyes believes this could be a match full of drama, action and once again - goals. Let's dive in to his best bet.
Goals looks to be a very strong bet in this match - and over 2.5 goals has landed in three of their four meetings to date.
It's worth pointing out that Man City have been shakey defensively. The defeats against Spurs and Brighton were concerning, and although 4-0 and 3-0 wins either side paint a different picture, Napoli will prove a tougher opponent than Man United and Wolves.
Man City are clearly capable - especially when Erling Haaland is on the pitch - but Napoli will look to expose gaps in their defence. The Italians won't sit back and hold out for a point - they know they have the talent to beat Man City. And if they sit back, they'll lose, it's as simple as that.
But Man City's "invincible" status has long gone over the last 12 months. And with that in mind, there's lots to like about Napoli's attack, and there's plenty of incentive several players will have for this match - de Bruyne, Hojlund and McTominay - will all want to make a statement.
Both teams are stacked with attacking quality, and an early goal could really set the tone for what looks to be the most exciting match of the round. Napoli should be shorter in the market - but I'll take my chance on match goals. Good luck if you're following.
