Newcastle host Liverpool in what looks to be a fiery match due to the ongoing transfer links surrounding Alexander Isak. On the pitch, Liverpool left it late to overcome Bournemouth at home 4-2, while Newcastle couldn’t kill off 10 men Aston Villa on their travels.
While Isak refuses to play, Newcastle must crack on. They’ve not been shy in the transfer market, bringing in Anthony Elanga, Malick Thiaw and Jacob Ramsey for over £120m as they look to return to the Champions League next season.
Eddie Howe’s team were tough to beat at St. James’ Park last campaign, where only Liverpool and Man City scored more goals in front of their own fans. That was largely down to Isak, who scored 23 Premier League goals last season - and they’ll need to adjust without the Swede this time round.
And Newcastle struggled against Aston Villa in their opener. Until a new striker comes in, fans will be worried about their long term prospects. However, having watched Bournemouth score two at Anfield, Howe will be hoping his team can exploit any weaknesses.
With so much focus and talk around Liverpool’s new forwards, pundits almost forgot to address potential issues at the other end of the pitch. And although Arne Slot’s side are clearly capable of out-scoring many of their opponents this season, it will have concerned him how easy Bournemouth were able to cut through his defence.
His side have failed to keep a clean sheet throughout pre-season, as well as in the Community Shield against Crystal Palace - and there’s clearly work to be done if they are to retain their title.
But their forward line is incredibly dangerous - and having scored four against Bournemouth, Slot will be delighted with how his team performed in the final third.
Liverpool may have won three of the last five head-to-heads, but this league fixture last campaign was one of the games of the season. An exhilarating 3-3 draw saw Mohammed Salah score late on but Fabian Schar’s 90th minute equaliser was perhaps thoroughly deserved.
However, you have to go all the way back to 2015 the last time Newcastle beat Liverpool at home - and with Isak, that record looks set to continue.
With Newcastle winless in their last nine matches, and having failed to beat Liverpool at home in over a decade, Liverpool look good value to record back-to-back wins. But will either side be able to keep a clean sheet? Let’s look at the Premier League betting odds.
It’s fair to say Newcastle are having a tough time but there was plenty of hope with their performance against Aston Villa - and the added drama around Isak may see his current teammates step up for one another.
Off the pitch, the interviews and togetherness of the squad hasn’t wavered, and back at St. James’ Park they are a side that knows how to make life tough for anyone. The fact Liverpool proved vulnerable at the back against Bournemouth will give them further hope they can at least get on the scoresheet - and under the lights, the atmosphere will certainly be in their favour.
But keeping the champions quiet - especially with their new-look attack will be an incredibly difficult task. A front line of Cody Gakpo, Mohammed Salah, Florian Wirtz and Hugo Ekitike is ridiculous - and if they all stay fit, Liverpool won’t draw many blanks this Premier League campaign.
