The inevitable has happened. Manchester United have sacked yet another manager. Since Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013, the Red Devils have gone through 10 different managers whether they were full time, interim or caretaker. Darren Fletcher is their 11th boss since Sir Alex left.
Ruben Amorim struggled from minute one at Old Trafford and he was relieved of his duties on Monday, January 5 2026 after just 14 months in charge. His final press conferences saw him have a rant about the ownership of the club before and after United's 1-1 draw away at Leeds United.
His reluctance to change things in terms of tactics and performances saw the Old Trafford faithful lose faith in him. Defeats against Grimsby Town and Everton and draws against Wolves and Leeds did not help his cause.
Darren Fletcher has been put in charge as interim manager for the time being, and he is the standalone favourite to replace Amorim in the Old Trafford hotseat.
Fletcher is currently the 7/4 favourite with BetMGM, and although he does not have any real managerial experience, he knows what it is like to be involved with Manchester United.
Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner is second favourite. He has worked wonders with Palace, he guided them to the FA Cup Final in 2025 - beating Manchester City at Wembley - while Palace also won the Community Shield with a penalties win over Premier League champions Liverpool.
Enzo Maresca has just been sacked by Chelsea despite winning the UEFA Conference League and the FIFA Club World Cup, but his obsession with replacing Pep Guardiola at Manchester City caused problems at Stamford Bridge.
Maresca used to be the Under 23 coach at City before leaving to join Leicester City. After guiding the Foxes to promotion to the Premier League, he left to become the new boss at Chelsea.
His heart is definitely with City, so the chances of him going to United are not as good as the odds suggest. United legend Nicky Butt has already voiced concerns that his links to City mean he is not the right for the job.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will always be a United legend. His winning goal in the 1999 Champions League Final is evidence of that. After retiring as a player,
Solskjaer took up management and was named as caretaker boss in 2019 when Jose Mourinho was sacked, He then got the job permanently and eventually won 91 of his 168 matches in charge with a win percentage record of 54.17.
He failed to win a trophy as United manager, although he did take them to the final of the Europa League in 2021. The fans adored him, and maybe it is time to bring back some of the old United magic and get someone in who knows what is required at the club.
Gareth Southgate has been out of management since his England contract expired in 2024. While in charge of the National team, Southgate took England to two European Championship finals and a World Cup semi final.
His style of football might not be the best to watch, but he does get results. Whether the United fans will want Southgate is another matter. He is a good manager, but will he be successful at Old Trafford?
In normal circumstances, anyone in their right mind would love to be manager of Manchester United. However, the culture at the club seems toxic and I am unsure whether a familiar face or someone new can change that.
Michael Carrick - who was caretaker boss at United in 2021 - is a name that has been mentioned. He left Middlesbrough in 2025, and I am not sure he did enough at Boro to warrant getting the United job on a full time basis.
Other contenders to replace Amorim include Sebastian Hoeness, Xavi, Kieran McKenna, Unai Emery and Thomas Tuchel. I cannot see Tuchel leaving England before the World Cup, while a lot of fans would live Xavi in charge following his work at Barcelona.
Below is the current betting odds list for the next permanent manager of Manchester United with odds provided by BetMGM.
