Hosts to fight

After winning their opening match 3-1 on their travels against Luxembourg, Northern Ireland fell to defeat against Germany in Cologne by the same scoreline.

However, while many expected Northern Ireland to fall short against Slovakia - a nation that had already beaten Germany - Michael O'Neill's team came out on top as 2-0 winners.

It was a huge result for Northern Ireland - but they are going to need at least one more during these qualifiers if they are to finish in the top two come November.

Will it be against Germany? They showed enough for 60 minutes in the reverse leg to certainly make it competitive - but perhaps the Germans quality will be telling come the final whistle.

Germany bouncing back

After Germany's shock defeat against Slovakia, they bounced back with a convincing second half performance against Northern Ireland to bag their first three points. A 4-0 hammering followed against Luxembourg on Saturday - and that has propelled them into first spot.

However, it's worth noting that Luxembourg played 70 minutes with 10 men - changing the complexion of the match. Germany were well on top - but the result may not have been so convincing against a stubborn Luxembourg defence.

A trip to Belfast will be trickier than their last encounter - but Julian Nagelsmann's team have turned a corner in front of goal - and that might be the difference.

These two nations have played each other on 16 occasions, and while Northern Ireland have sprung a surprise twice - those wins came back to back in 1982 and 1983.

Since, Germany have won all 10 matches that have followed - including the recent 3-1 victory on home soil. Northern Ireland have it all to do.

Germans will be too strong

Despite taking the lead in the 7th minute in the reverse fixture, Northern Ireland equalised and found themselves frustrating the favourites after the opening 45 minutes.

However, Germany rallied and scored two in the second half dominating the rest of the match. With 81% possession in the second half, the Germans restricted Northern Ireland to zero shots and just two corners. It was men vs boys in the second 45.

Germany may have scored four against Luxembourg - but even with 31 shots and 84% possession - they couldn't completely batter their opponents as expected.

But Germany have scored seven goals in their last three matches - conceding just one - and we might just witness a more professional performance in Belfast on Monday night.

The visitors are odds-on for a reason - but their resilient defence should keep Northern Ireland at arms length throughout the match and the Germans can pick up three points without too much hassle.
