Just as it appeared Arsenal were cruising towards their first Premier League title since 2004, a home defeat to Manchester United on Sunday has raised genuine doubts about their credentials.
That loss made it three league games without a win for the Gunners, who now sit only four points clear of Manchester City and Aston Villa. Both rivals returned to winning ways last weekend after suffering defeats in their previous matches.
Mikel Arteta’s side have the opportunity to re-establish a seven-point lead on Saturday when they face Leeds United, a day before their closest challengers are back in action.
There is a full programme of 10 Premier League fixtures this weekend, running from Saturday, 31 January, through to Monday, 2 February.
Premier League tipster Ben Smith has put together a five-leg accumulator across the round. All selections are available with Highbet, who are offering competitive Premier League odds on every fixture.
After a poor December, Brighton have steadied things slightly, but the numbers still make for uncomfortable reading. Their only league win in the last 10 matches came at home against Burnley.
At the Amex in that spell, they have lost to Aston Villa and been held by West Ham, Sunderland and most recently Bournemouth. With that in mind, it is hard to justify backing Brighton at odds-on against Everton.
The Toffees’ last two away trips saw them execute their game plan perfectly, taking all three points at Nottingham Forest and Aston Villa.
Since 2020, they have won three and drawn two of their five visits to Brighton. While past meetings aren’t necessarily relevant, they do point to a recurring issue. Brighton often struggle at home against sides that are disciplined and well organised.
There is value with David Moyes and his team here. Everton are capable of winning the match outright, but for the purposes of this accumulator, the double chance looks the sensible angle.
Despite relegation looking inevitable, Wolverhampton Wanderers have shown some fight in recent weeks. They have picked up their first league win of the season, progressed in the FA Cup, and again proved competitive on the road when going down narrowly to Manchester City last time out.
Bournemouth had been struggling themselves, with some talk that they could be pulled into the relegation picture. Home wins over Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool have eased that pressure for now.
Their away record remains a concern though, with no wins in nine on the road. Given that, it is difficult to side with Bournemouth here.
Leeds United have failed to score at home just once this season, and that came back in August when they played out a goalless draw with Newcastle United.
Arsenal have conceded in over half of their away matches, so it was surprising to see both teams to score priced at Evens here.
Individual mistakes have started to creep into Arsenal’s performances. Whether that is down to nerves at the top of the table or simply a coincidence remains to be seen, but even without that factor, their defensive record looks a little overrated in this market.
Two wins from two have offered West Ham United fans a bit of hope after it looked as though a home defeat to Nottingham Forest might prove decisive.
The only drawback is that Forest have taken four points from their last two matches, keeping the Irons at arm’s length with a five-point gap still in place.
Maintaining that run looks difficult for Nuno Espirito Santo and his side, as they come up against a Chelsea team arriving on the back of four consecutive wins in all competitions.
The reverse fixture was one-sided, and while the margin may be narrower this time, Chelsea should still come out comfortable winners.
Things appear to be unravelling at Crystal Palace. The club have lost their captain, the manager looks set to depart, and there is speculation that centre forward Jean-Philippe Mateta could be heading to their next opponents, Nottingham Forest.
On the pitch, the Eagles have lost eight and drawn three of their last 11 league matches, and with issues continuing off it, there is little to suggest an upturn is close.
Forest, meanwhile, have taken seven points from their last three games and are approaching their relegation battle in the right manner. Following a midweek home win in the UEFA Europa League, another big performance is expected here.
