The latest Premier League matchweek was a significant one, marking the end of Ange Postecoglou’s time at Nottingham Forest and Manchester United’s first win at Anfield since 2016.
This weekend’s fixtures begin on Friday, 24th October, and run through to Sunday, 26th October. Premier League tipster Ben Smith has compiled a five-leg acca with BetMGM, who offer among the best combined Premier League odds for the selections below.
West Ham United’s display against Brentford on Monday night was appalling, even by their standards this season. The only small consolation was that the defeat was limited to 2-0.
They conceded 15 shots in the first half while managing only three themselves. Once they finally, and deservedly, fell behind on the stroke of half-time, they never looked like getting back into the game.
Usually, a new manager’s arrival brings some optimism to a struggling side, but that feeling was absent at the London Stadium last time out. Nuno Espirito Santo didn’t help himself by leaving his only available recognised striker, Callum Wilson, on the bench for the entire match.
Leeds United have also lost back-to-back games but probably deserved more at Burnley on Saturday, having comfortably won the xG battle. They’ve come out on top in that metric in each of their last three matches, yet have only managed to take one point. They look the far more likely side to respond on Friday.
Old Trafford has been a happy hunting ground for Brighton in recent times, with the Seagulls winning on each of their last three visits to the ‘Theatre of Dreams’.
Each of those successes produced at least three goals, with Brighton winning 3-1 at Manchester United in each of the last two seasons, adding to a 2-1 victory at the Amex last August.
Those past scorelines count for very little in the context of Saturday’s fixture, but all signs point to a similarly entertaining affair. Brighton’s last six league fixtures have seen both teams score, with over 2.5 goals landing in all but one of them.
Over 2.5 has also hit in five of United’s last six. With their front line beginning to click and Brighton posing a constant threat going forward, it would be surprising if this one ended quietly.
Arne Slot has found it difficult to fit all of his attacking options into the Liverpool side - particularly Hugo Ekitike, who has at times been unlucky to make way for Alexander Isak despite a strong start to life at Anfield.
Both were in the lineup at Eintracht Frankfurt on Wednesday night, and it was the Frenchman who made the greater impact, bringing Liverpool level with a burst from his own half and a composed finish.
Isak went off with a groin problem at half-time, clearing the way for Ekitike to lead the line against Brentford. The Reds have looked at their best this season with the 23-year-old up front, and Slot is also likely to start Florian Wirtz, who seemed to find his rhythm in midweek.
Despite perceptions of a slow start in England, Wirtz ranks second among Premier League attacking midfielders for chances created per 90 minutes. Ekitike can profit from that, and his price looks generous to score at the Gtech Community Stadium.
When Manchester City lost back-to-back games against Tottenham Hotspur and Brighton in August, it seemed they were set for another season on the fringes of the title race, but Erling Haaland had other ideas.
The Norwegian has scored in every appearance for club and country since then, finding the net in 12 consecutive matches and tallying 22 goals in that time.
There are few teams in world football I’d be put off backing him to score against at 4/5, and Aston Villa certainly aren’t one of them, having shipped five goals in four home matches this term.
Villa have kept four clean sheets in all competitions, but their opponents’ shot counts in those games were 19 (Feyenoord), 17 (Bologna), 20 (Everton), and 16 (Newcastle United).
They got away with it in those matches, but Haaland is unlikely to be as forgiving if chances come at that sort of rate.
It’s becoming an important spell for Thomas Frank at Tottenham. After taking nine points from their first four league games and winning their Champions League opener, they’ve managed just one more victory from six matches across those competitions. They were clearly second best in Monaco on Wednesday and had goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario to thank for leaving with a point.
Frank has been dealt a tough hand, with nine players on the treatment table currently, including significant absentees James Maddison, Dejan Kulusevski, Dominic Solanke, and Cristian Romero.
A trip to Everton is never an easy assignment after a European away game. The Toffees have won three and drawn two at their new ground, and with Jack Grealish returning to the side, they look good value to take all three points on Sunday.
