Two juggernauts of the English game face off at Anfield with Liverpool hosting Manchester United in the biggest game of the weekend. Premier League football tipster Matthew O’Regan has his betting tips and predictions.
Liverpool secured their second Premier League title last campaign, winning the league by ten points despite takin their foot off the gas in the latter stages of the campaign. Arne Slot’s side were dominant throughout and will be looking to make it back-to-back titles.
Slot has developed a reputation for his ruthlessness and that was apparent this summer. Milos Kerkez, Jeremie Frimpong, Alexander Isak and Florian Wirtz were signed for a huge outlay but have all flattered to deceive. One positive signing has been Hugo Ekitike who has scored five goals in all competitions this campaign.
Despite winning their first seven games of the season, performances have worried the Liverpool faithful, with their side winning only one game by more than one goal – Bournemouth at home in which Federico Chiesa and Mo Salah sealed the game late in a 4-2 win.
However, a 1-0 loss in the Champions League was sandwiched between 2-1 losses at Crystal Palace and Chelsea making it three consecutive losses for Slot’s side. Still, they sit second in the league and will be relishing the chance to face their bitter rivals.
On the injury front, Alisson, Giovanni Leoni and Stefan Bajcetic are absent, while Wataru Endo, Ryan Gravenberch and Ibrahima Konate are doubts.
Ruben Amorim tenure as Manchester United boss continues to disappoint, with the Red Devils sat tenth in the league. Old Trafford has been a happy hunting ground, with all three victories coming infront of their own supporters. However, Sunderland victory aside it has not been comfortable.
Enzo Maresca and Robert Sanchez self-implosion gave United the upper hand, but The Red Devils made hard work of the 2-1 win. A last-minute Bruno Fernandes penalty saw them scrape past Burnley but improvements are needed.
On the road, their only point came in the opening away game against Fulham and they have since lost to Manchester City (3-0) and Brentford (3-1).
In terms of absentees, United will be without Ayden Heaven, Lizandro Martinez and Noussari Mazraoui.
While historically Manchester United have the upper hand in head to heads, Liverpool are slowly bridging the gap. The Reds have only lost one of the last seven meetings and that came after extra time in the FA Cup in 2025. United held Liverpool to a draw in the last meeting, with Slot's side winning 0-3 at Old Trafford.
While both teams defensive struggles have been noted, under 3.5 goals has landed in a combined 10/14 for the sides, making the under 3.5 goal line appealing as a bet.
