High-flying Arsenal take the exhausting trip up north this Sunday to face Eddie Howe’s Newcastle in what will be a huge test for the Gunners. Read our betting tips and predictions below.
Newcastle currently find themselves in 13th place in the Premier League. After losing their formidable striker Alexander Isak to Liverpool following a gruelling summer transfer saga, they have been void of ideas when it comes to putting the ball in the back of the net. Their only goals so far have come against champions Liverpool in a 3-2 loss and in a 1-0 win over a currently pointless Wolves side. Howe will be desperate to find a new way to break teams down, but this weekend’s defence will likely be their toughest test yet.
With the acquisition of giant German Nick Woltemade for the best part of £70 million, Howe will be hoping the Magpies’ attacking fortunes will soon turn. Fellow summer signing Anthony Elanga was benched in their dismal display away to Bournemouth last weekend, highlighting the boss’ desperation for league goals.
Aside from their struggles up front, though, the Toon backline remains strong, with four clean sheets from their opening five fixtures. The addition of Malick Thiaw has allowed Howe to experiment with different defensive setups, and most have been successful. Sven Botman, back after missing almost half of last season through injury, has already been key alongside veteran Kieran Trippier.
Arteta’s Arsenal underlined their “title challengers” tag last weekend with an impressive outing against Manchester City at the Emirates. Martinelli’s calm dink over the rushing Gianluigi Donnarumma cancelled out Erling Haaland’s opener to deny the Citizens all three points. If this is to be the season when Arteta finally lifts a Premier League trophy, his side will need to keep extending their strong record against the traditional top six.
Despite a solid start, Arteta is still criticised for his “defensive” setups in big games, often starting three defensive-minded midfielders or leaving out more direct players such as Eberechi Eze. We saw this against both City and Liverpool, but the question remains: is it time for Arsenal to come out of their shell and go for all three points from the off?
Arsenal have one fewer clean sheet than Newcastle despite sitting 2nd in the table, which isn’t too surprising considering the two games they conceded in were against Liverpool at Anfield and City last weekend. Gabriel and Saliba have been an impenetrable pairing, and Woltemade faces a huge task if he wants to add to his tally this Sunday.
The fixture has produced a mixed bag in recent years. Newcastle’s 2-0 win at St James’ Park in 2022 cost Arsenal a Champions League spot, as they slipped below Spurs into fifth. More recently, a 4-0 aggregate win for the Magpies in last season’s Carabao Cup semi-final set them on course to lift their first trophy in 70 years. In the league, Arsenal won 1-0 at the Emirates and Newcastle won 1-0 at St James’ Park last season, results that helped both secure top-five finishes and Champions League football.

Best bet: Under 2.5 goals - 4/5 - Betano
With both sides showing defensive solidity and their respective front men yet to truly click, this one doesn’t scream goals. St James’ Park is always a daunting trip, so Arteta may well set up with the same caution he showed against Liverpool and City.
Given Newcastle’s struggles even against the likes of Aston Villa and Wolves, it’s hard to see them finding a way past this Arsenal defence. Even with Anthony Gordon back from suspension and the roar of the home crowd, Howe’s side face an uphill battle to break down the Gunners.
This selection has landed in 4 of Newcastle’s 5 fixtures and 3 of Arsenal’s. Both sides will want to make a statement, but with defensive discipline likely to dominate, this Super Sunday clash could fizzle into a cagey, low-scoring affair.
