West Ham and Nottingham Forest face off at the London Stadium and Matthew O’Regan has his betting tips and predictions.
It’s been a turbulent start to the season in East London, with Graham Potter having already been given his marching orders by Sullivan and Co. The Hammers now find themselves under the guidance of Nuno Espírito Santo, who as we know, was with Nottingham Forest at the start of this campaign.
In fact, it was Graham Potter’s West Ham side which saw Nuno sacked by Evangelis Mariankis, when The Irons won three-nil at the City Ground at the end of August. Since then, West Ham have failed to win a game of football but looked more dogged in Nuno’s first game in charge away at Everton, a one-all draw with the talisman, Jarrod Bowen, rescuing the Hammers yet again.
Before the international break, Nuno’s side lost to title favourites Arsenal two-nil at the Emirates, a ground at which they had won at in their last two previous visits.
West Ham’s summer business has left little to be desired, however, El Hadji Malick Diouf seems to be one of the signings of the summer. The 20-year-old Senegalese full back has settled into life at Rush Green remarkably well, notching four assists already this season. Having signed from Slavia Prague, West Ham continue to keep a tradition alive with the Czech outfit, where they signed cult heroes Vladimir Coufal and Tomas Soucek from in recent years.
With Nuno making his first outing in the West Ham dugout at the London Stadium on Monday evening, West Ham fans will be hoping that this could be the start of a turning tide for their team. However, with planned supporter protests, this may derail any plans Nuno has of getting his first win as West Ham boss, especially with the Irons having lost all three home games so far this season. In injury news, West Ham will be without Niklas Fullkrug, who has suffered another hamstring injury, a recurring theme during his time at the Hammers.
Former MK Dons captain and Republic of Ireland international, Keith Andrews, has started life at Brentford surprisingly better than anticipated by the press before the start of the campaign. With a regimented, intense style of football, the West London outfit have earned a few plaudits from the press and pundits alike so far.
Many anticipated the Bees to struggle after the departure of long term manager Thomas Frank in the summer to Tottenham, however, life under Andrews seems like it has potential. The West Londoners have won two out of seven league games, beating Aston Villa and Manchester United at the G-Tech Community Stadium, whilst also drawing with West London neighbours Chelsea.
They also find themselves in the fourth round of the EFL Cup after dispatching premier league opposition twice, in Bournemouth and Aston Villa for a second time. However, they’ve lost all three fixtures so far on the road in the league, at Nottingham Forest, Sunderland and Fulham. But with West Ham having lost all three home games at home so far, as already mentioned, there is every chance of a change in someone’s fortunes this Monday.
There is much to like about Brentford this year, especially since the arrival of Jordan Henderson. Henderson’s experience and quality has seen him keep his inclusion in the England squads, whilst playing at a very high level in Brentford’s opening games. Dango Outtarra’s sizeable price tag raises eyebrows when signing from Bournemouth as a direct replacement for Bryan Mbuemo, but he has settled into life at Brentford well, scoring the winner in their first win of the season against Villa. Caoimhin Kelleher has proven a steal at £13 million from Liverpool, providing more consistent goalkeeping for the Bees, as Mark Flekken moved on.
Meanwhile Igor Thiago has taken on the burden of scoring goals, already taking his personal to tally to four, shouldering the responsibility after Yoane Wissa’s and Mbuemo’s summer departures.
Brentford have the upper hand over the Hammers since joining the Premier League in 2021. In eight league fixtures, Brentford have won six games, drawing one and only losing once, a victory for West Ham that saw Jarrod Bowen notch his first and only hat-trick in claret and blue. That win was at the London Stadium, but with the Bees having won their three times in the last four seasons, there will be confidence amongst Keith Andrews’ camp.
Diouf has been a revelation since signing from Slavia Prague. The marauding wing back has firmly established himself as a fan favourite, notching three assists in seven starts.
