Pep Guardiola is reportedly set to leave Manchester City at the end of the season, ending months of speculation over his future. Although there has been no official confirmation, Sky Sports suggests the club have been anticipating Guardiola’s exit.
Staff members have supposedly been informed that Guardiola, who has a year left on his current contract, will stand down as the manager after City’s final league game against Aston Villa on Sunday.
Sky Sports pundits Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher have expressed their opinions on the seismic news that broke on the eve of City’s pivotal Premier League clash with Bournemouth.
The release of a report around Guardiola’s imminent departure came during Arsenal’s 1-0 win over Burnley last night, a result that put the Gunners within touching distance of a first league title since 2004. And Neville has conceded the leak will have been ‘disappointing’ for all affected parties.
Sharing his thoughts on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football, Neville said:
“I’m surprised that it’s broken right now. Not just because it’s during this match [Arsenal vs Burnley], but it’s the night before a Man City game. Something like that it’s game-changer news.
“I think of being in school and the news of Kenny Dalglish leaving Liverpool, or Sir Alex Ferguson leaving Manchester United and Jurgen Klopp leaving Liverpool recently. They’re just such huge moments in football, and I don’t see it’s news Man City would let get out or want to get out.
“If it is true, Man City will be extremely disappointed that it has broken now, and so will Pep Guardiola.”
Rather than criticising the leak, Carragher insists Guardiola wouldn’t have made a snap decision over his future. Instead, he intimated the club had little control over when the news would break.
Discussing the matter, Carragher said:
“I don’t suppose Man City or Guardiola can do anything about the timing. They have to let the club know, the next guy coming in, he’d have to have information about this.
“The closer it gets to the end of the season, there’s more people who know. Eventually, it comes out.
“This wouldn’t have happened overnight you imagine. It would’ve been the last few weeks, maybe a couple of months. There’s just too many people involved for it not to come to an end.”
Over the past few months, Guardiola has sidestepped questions over his future. However, Guardiola has undoubtedly left an indelible mark on English football.
Having amassed 20 trophies during a remarkable decade at the Etihad, Guardiola’s innovative tactics and philosophy have been copied, including goalkeepers playing out from the back.
It is believed the club are now working out the best way to mark the achievements of a legend, who could still seal a stunning treble. One of the proposed ideas is to name the newly expanded North Stand after their departing manager.
Judging by the latest developments, Enzo Maresca could succeed Guardiola. The former Chelsea boss has ties to City, having previously worked as Guardiola’s assistant during the club’s treble-winning campaign in 2023.
The Italian has been widely backed by some of the UK’s best betting sites at 1/4 to take over the reins, and he will believe he has unfinished business in the Premier League. Meanwhile, Bayern Munich boss and City icon Vincent Kompany is perceived as a viable option, trading at 3/1.
