Thomas Frank’s side are currently 14th in the table, which is below expectations, well below where fans and pundits expected for a club of their size. Spurs have been hit by injuries; Mohammed Kudus has been ruled out until April. They also recently sold Brennan Johnson to Crystal Palace.
Recent results have increased a sense within the Spurs hierarchy that appointing Thomas Frank may have been a mistake; Tottenham have won only seven league fixtures this season. They come into this fixture on the back of a 3-2 away loss against Bournemouth, Antoine Semenyo scored a 95th-minute winner.
Aston Villa have been in excellent form throughout the current league campaign. They’re currently third in the table and will be aiming to secure a Champions League place; Villa are also in the title race. Unai Emery’s side has lost only one of their last five, which came in a 4-1 away loss at the Emirates Stadium.
Last season, Villa reached the FA Cup semi-finals after beating Cardiff 2-0 in the fifth round, and they managed a 3-0 win against Preston at Deepdale. Unai Emery’s side lost 3-0 to Crystal Palace in the semi-final.
In recent fixtures, Spurs have the better record in head-to-head meetings. Tottenham have won 19 of their last 28 games. However, Aston Villa have won the last three meetings between the two sides. In their most recent fixture, Villa won 2-1 away at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium; Morgan Rogers and Emiliano Buendia were the goal scorers. The two sides also met in the FA Cup Fourth Round last season. Villa also won this fixture 2-1, which led to their first progression to the fifth round in about a decade
With Spurs looking to bounce back after a disappointing midweek loss against Bournemouth and Villa looking to continue their excellent recent form, it should be an entertaining fixture.
Louie Truman has taken a look at the odds for this match and has put his best bet forward.
Despite the results not going the way of Spurs recently, they’ve been finding the back of the net, especially at home; Tottenham have scored four goals in their last three home fixtures. However, during home fixtures, many fixtures have ended in a chorus of boos due to poor performances.
Thomas Frank’s side has only won two home league games this season, which came against a struggling Burnley at the start of the season and a Brentford side Frank knows well.
Aston Villa’s last three wins all finished above 2.5 goals, and six of the last seven fixtures against Tottenham have finished above 2.5 goals.
