Sunderland return to the Stadium of Light for a Sunday fixture against Leeds, who are currently sitting in 16th. The Black Cats have had an excellent start to the current campaign after gaining promotion via the play-offs last season.
Régis Le Bris’s side can realistically aim to secure European football this season, which would be a remarkable achievement after securing promotion last season. They come into this fixture on the back of a 0-0 draw against Brighton at the Amex Stadium, which was a good result considering multiple players have gone to AFCON.
A Sunderland win would be their second in five matches and mark a sixth straight game in which they avoided defeat. The Stadium of Light has been a fortress this season, with the hosts unbeaten at home in the Premier League, winning five matches and drawing three.
Leeds have been excellent recently, but have struggled for consistency throughout the season. Daniel Farke’s side have secured eight points from their last four, and they’re six points above the relegation zone. United impressed with a 3-1 home win against Chelsea and a 4-1 win against Crystal Palace in their recent outing. Despite these wins, the draws against Liverpool and Brentford suggest they can be vulnerable at the back.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin has been excellent in the final third recently; he’s scored six goals in his last five Premier League outings and will remain a significant threat for Leeds.
Recent meetings between the two sides have been extremely close; both teams have won two, and there have been three draws. The last time these two sides met was in the Championship, Leeds managed to come out on top at Elland Road; Pascal Struijk scored a brace, which included a 95th-minute winner.
Both teams head into this in good form, so they’ll be looking to maintain their momentum and secure crucial points.
Louie Truman has taken a look at the Premier League odds for this match and puts forward his best pick.
Sunderland have been solid this season, with seven wins, six draws, and four losses from 17 games. Their defence has been impressive, conceding just 17 goals and keeping six clean sheets under Régis Le Bris. Leeds, in contrast, have been inconsistent, winning only five of 17 matches and losing eight.
However, United haven’t struggled to find the back of the net recently; they put four past Crystal Palace last Saturday, and The Black Cats have scored four in their last two home fixtures. Both teams have found the net in their last nine games, and over 2.5 goals have been scored in seven of Leeds’ previous nine fixtures.
