MAJESTIC MERLIN comes here and bids to go one better than he did last year finishing runner up in what was his first full season in training. That, along with a fine effort to finish the season, topped off a decent opening campaign although he is yet to break his maiden. This year’s renewal looks a little weak and with conditions likely to suit my selection well, the each-way placings at 9/1 look very generous. Jack Martin rode him in this event last year so will know his task and hand and takes off 5lb which only enhances his credentials on his seasonal debut.

Selection 2 | 1.07 Newcastle | OUR IDIC BOY - E/W @ 17/2

OUR IDIC BOY finished a close up 4th last time out when I put him up each way at 40/1 and could have even won the race if it wasn't for an awkward clip of the hurdles over the last. He showed a much improved attitude and ability that day and would have learnt a lot for the experience. I think he is likely to step up on this again and no reason to desert him at this stage.
