Ginger Joe - Betting Tips for Day 2 at York - Thursday 16 May 2024

Key Points
  • Four betting tips to play however you want
  • Two big Handicaps, two double figure prices to kick off Day 2
  • A short-priced banker for the Dante Stakes

Two Handicaps and two more Group 2s for Day 2 at York

We move on to Day 2 of the York Spring Meeting and I am really looking forward to some hot action. To start us off, the first two races on the card are both highly-competitive big field Handicaps and I have double-figure betting tips for each of them, which I’m hoping can get us off to a great start.

Along with those, we also have two Group 2s, with the Dubai Fillies’ Stakes and the Dante Stakes being the two feature races of the day. These are both very important races on the Flat calendar, and should give us some clues about the most likely candidates for the Classics we have coming up later in the season.

So altogether we have two betting tips at big prices, and two at much shorter ones, leaving it entirely open as to how you want to bet. Personally, I’m going for win singles on the shorties, each way on the big numbers, and then doing cross-doubles too, but the choice is all yours at the end of the day.

My bookie choice for York Day 2

For Day 2 of the York meeting you might just fancy giving Betiton a look. Bet £15, and you’ll get a £10 free bet in return. With another day at York to go, and a big weekend coming up, every little helps.

14:15 The Lindum York Handicap 5f - Alligator Alley @ 16/1

We start off on Thursday with a very competitive 19-runner Handicap and there are some very good Sprinters in this field. I actually narrowed this down to three potential runners before making my final selection, so let’s take a closer peek. Looking For Lynda certainly has a decent chance back on the firm ground at York and he is a course and distance winner too. The firm ground will definitely be a positive for this gelding, who at the age of four, is most likely still improving. He won off a mark of 84 and went close at 85, both on firm ground, so off a mark of 87 he should get fairly competitive here.

Korker heads the weights carrying 10 stone, and he is a lovely horse, but he will need a personal best to win. That being said if he breaks well and can find a prominent position he certainly wouldn’t be out of this. Clarendon House is the favourite here and he has won twice off his current mark, so he looks well-handicapped. However, have doubts about him handling the York track as he has been rather disappointing on his previous two visits.

Copper Knight is a ten-year-old now, but he clearly retains a fair level of ability having finished second at Chester last week. That was an encouraging sign, considering his best form has come on straight tracks. In fact, he is pretty much a course specialist here at York, having won off much higher marks previously, and if he gets out of the gates sharply, he could be hard to catch.

That said, I’ll be siding with Alligator Alley, for the David O’Meara team, who looks set for a big run here. He went very close behind Equilateral here in August and is now weighted to turn that form around, which I think gives him the edge this time round. Conditions suit him nicely, he has Jason Watson riding and dropping to a mark of 89 makes him weighted to win in my opinion. No excuses for him and Alligator Alley gets my nod in the opener.

14:45 - The Oakmere Handicap 7f - Look Back Smiling @ 10/1

In the Oakmere Handicap we have a 20-runner field and another deeply competitive race. Al Mubhir for William Haggas is an eye-catcher, and I think he could have a big run in him. He has mainly raced on soft or heavy though, so the fast ground may or may not bring out more improvement in him. However, it’s more than possible that this son of Frankel remains ahead of the handicapper and I wouldn’t put anyone off backing him. Bopedro could go well running off his last winning mark and he has Jason Watson in the saddle, so it would be no surprise to see him bounce back to form here.

But I’m convinced that the one to side with is Look Back Smiling, who has a very good speed figure and is progressing nicely with each run. He has run mostly on soft ground so far, but as a son of Fast Company (who was a Group winner on firm) he could well show a lot of improvement on this faster surface. Look Back Smiling is only a four-year-old, which is a slight concern, but this gelding looks like he could have plenty more improvement to come, and I think he has an excellent chance for such a big-priced runner.

15:15 - The Dubai Fillies’ Stakes (Group 2) 1m 2f - Sapphire Seas @ 7/2

Moving on to the first Group 2 race of the day and we have a very intriguing lineup. Bluestocking and Free Wind are very closely matched on figures and they both handle these conditions well. Bluestocking did finish two lengths ahead of Free Wind when they met on Champions’ Day but things could well work out differently here. I think with their form being so closely matched though, there isn’t a lot to choose between them, but I have another candidate in mind.

My selection here is the Godolphin runner, Sapphire Seas, who is open to any amount of improvement this season. Following her racing debut she went on to win four in a row and was very progressive throughout her campaign. She then had a break, giving her plenty of time to mature before her run in a Group 2 at Meydan back in February. She finished second to stablemate English Rose that day, but she will have come on plenty for the run. I think we’ll see a much-improved performance from this Frankel filly on Thursday and I am going to take on the two at the top of the market.

15:45 York - The Dante Stakes (Group 2) 1m 2½f - Ancient Wisdom @ 6/5

Lastly, we have the Dante Stakes which is the main highlight of Thursday’s card. For this year's renewal it’s the Godolphin colt Ancient Wisdom that heads the betting and he looks like a horse improving nicely. However, all of this seven-runner field has been progressing nicely and I am hoping we see a real smart horse emerge from the pack.

Al Musmak brings some strong form into this having finished runner up in the Royal Lodge to finish his two-year-old campaign, and I fully expect to find that he has improved as a three-year-old. Cambridge is a bit short on form, but he must be respected as Ballydoyle’s only runner. Caviar Heights has been a little hit and miss, but it’s not difficult to find his latest effort very impressive.

Nonetheless, I think that the current favourite, Ancient Wisdom, stands out here and will prove incredibly tough to beat. He is rated 6lb clear of the rest and still looks open to more progression this season. His only defeat came at the hands of Rosallion last July over seven furlongs, but he has won twice over the mile since then, and looks ready to improve again for this step up in trip. He may be a short price, but Ancient Wisdom is highly unlikely to get beaten here.
