KEMARI tasks up the first leg of the Lucky 31 and even though I tried to find something to get him beat he is potentially a good thing and is the one I came up with in the end. He ran really well last time and showed signs that he will continue to improve again and has everything going for him.
He was a really good winner at Royal Ascot and when he got to the front he was well in command and he looked potentially very classy. I don't think the 3lb penalty is enough to stop him improving. The Ballydoyle pair SIR LUCAN and HIGH DEFINITION have a lot to prove and the latter was most disappointing when sent off favourite for the Irish Derby and I can't back him off the back of that run.
SIR LUCAN ran well last time but still needs to improve but Frankie is on board and he looks like he could get a little more out of him. I’d certainly have SIR LUCAN over HIGH DEFINITION at least. I just think a few of them have something to prove but KEMARI has answered every question of him so far, and could be ahead of them.
J: Kevin Manning / T: J S Bolger
MAC SWINEY is my selection in the Juddmonte and there won't be many that agree with me but I strongly believe he can go really close here on the drop back to 1m2f after finding 1m4f too much of a stretch on his last two occasions. Rain would be a positive but I think he will handle this ground well and may go under the radar in this.
He won the Irish 2000 and got the better of his superstar stablemate miler Poetic Flare who has been brilliant all year and in a race which may fall apart I think MAC SWINEY is definitely worth a go at the prices. MISHRIF really disappointed me on his last two runs following his big wins in the Saudi Cup and the Dubai Sheema Classic and looked out of sorts so he is actually my Lay of the Day.
LOVE to my eye was also a little underwhelming last time, so I think on the basis that they both need to bounce back to form they are two worth trying to get beat. MAC SWINEY I think will take advantage of the drop back in trip.
J: Daniel Tudhope / T: David O'Meara
GET SHIRTY is a very interesting contender here considering he hasn't yet ran in the UK and makes his debut for connections in a big handicap. He has some decent form in France and is potentially really good here. David O'Meara is really good at placing these horses and it would be no surprise to see a massive run on the cards. I really fancied ARCADIAN SUNRISE until I realised he is only 9/2 in the betting. He looks well handicapped but I’m taking him on with the French recruit.
J: William Buick / T: David Barron
ATIYAH is the selection for me in the Fillies handicap and I think she could be open to so much more following her runaway success last time out. She has been given a nice two month break and a repeat performance would at least see her go close here and at the prices she looks the way to go. She looks ahead of her mark and has a really positive Jockey booking in William Buick who has a really good strike rate for connections.
For an alternative in this the main danger I think comes in the shape of TENAYA CANYON, but she is creeping up the weights quite a bit now and I think she may just find one too good this time round. Oisin Murphy takes the ride on BALLINTOY HARBOUR and is likely to get the best out of her but for me ATIYAH ticks a lot of boxes.
J: Luke Morris / T: James Ferguson
ARISTOBULUS is my NAP of the day in the finale on Day 1 and I think he could take some serious beating in this. He has won twice over 6 furlongs sandwiched either side of a less telling effort at 7 furlongs in the middle where he didn't quite stay. He was ultra impressive last time and he could be way ahead of his mark here. He pulled way clear in the final furlong on his latest run and carries next to nothing at the bottom of the weights here.
I really like BOSH and JADHLAAN but on this occasion at the weights It's hard for me to get away from ARISTOBULUS. In time I think BOSH will be the best of these but he looks a tad tricky and I actually think he will do even better over shorter. ARISTOBULUS gets the vote for me though at this stage, he looked classy and very professional last time at a very early stage in his career. Big chances here!
