We have made it to Masters week and it’s time to reveal my best betting tips for the first Major of the year. We have a stacked field for Augusta and I can’t wait for this event to get under way. It’s not the easiest course to win at and it takes a really unique sort of player to claim a green jacket but I’m feeling confident that I have found the recipe for success with my team this week.
It has been an interesting lead up to the Masters this year, as a lot of the big names haven’t been doing too much winning, but it’s still quite likely that this week’s winner will come from the top quarter of the betting market. I think I have a really good squad lined up here, so let’s get onto my preview and best bets for the 2024 Masters without further delay.
For Masters week BetMGM are offering new customers the chance to claim a £40 bonus. All you need to do is bet £10, and you’ll get £40 in free bets. Don’t miss out on this fantastic opportunity.
The first Major of the year takes place at the Augusta National over 7,555 yards and this is one of the most iconic golf courses in the world. John Rahm comes into this year's event looking to become the fourth player in history to make it back to back wins at Augusta and he has an obvious chance, but at a price of 7/2 you have to take him on with such a class field set to tee off on Thursday.
Rory Mcilroy is also going to be popular this week simply due to how good he is, but for me he isn’t suited to Augusta and I wouldn’t be interested in backing him based on his record around this course. In fact, there are several other top players that I’m not interested in either, the two most significant of those being Ludvig Aberg and Wyndham Clark. Despite how impressive they have both been, a Masters debutant hasn’t won the event since Fuzzy Zoeller back in 1979 and I don’t see that changing any time soon.
For those that like looking at stats to narrow down their selections, I would say distance control on approach shots is by far the most important stat to look at. If you have players with good distance control, they are the players that will find birdie opportunities and any missed green around Augusta is very bad news indeed.
This is the one Major where you rarely find a shock result. It really does take the complete player to win around this course and it’s not often that you’ll find one at a big price due to the sheer level of difficulty the Augusta National presents. Players here need to be straight off the tee, accurate with their irons, and sharp with their short game and I have three selections that tick all of those boxes.
My strongest selection for the Masters is five-time Major Champion Brooks Koepka, who stands out to me as the best bet of the week. He is a seriously good ball striker and he has a very good record around Augusta, finishing second on two occasions and I think he will be right in the mix again this week. One thing I love about his game is that he doesn’t make too many mistakes, and this course actually suits his style of play much better than most.
With two U.S Opens and three PGA Championships to his name, Brooks Koepka is right up there with the elite and I think he can add another Major to his already impressive resume. His previous experience here will go a long way towards his chance of finally winning his first green jacket and for me, he is the most solid player in the field.
Victor Hovland is a player that has been on my radar for the Masters for months now. He has been nothing short of spectacular over the last year and I’m staying loyal to him despite two poor performances heading into this week. His iron game has been excellent for the most part and he will hit plenty of greens in regulation here, so I definitely think he has the class to get it done.
He has drifted quite significantly in the betting, but personally I think this could be a bit of an overreaction and would not be surprised at all to see him instantly bounce back to form during Masters week. The issue in his last two tournaments has been his short game, but there is nothing to suggest that this is a permanent struggle and I’m not as concerned about it as many seem to be. I see it more as a small worry, but not enough of one to warrant such a significant drift, so I’ll be taking full advantage of his current 28/1 price.
My third selection for the Masters is Xander Schauffele, a player who has been ultra-consistent this season and could well be on his way to pick up his first Major. He is up to world number 5 and has seven PGA Tour wins to his name already. Literally the only thing missing from his resume is a Major and I think that Xander Schauffele has every chance of changing that this week.
He is similar to Koepka in the sense that he is particularly well-suited to this course, and assuming he is hitting the ball well this week, he is a very solid each way option. He has played in eight events this year and finished in the Top 10 for six of those, so he more-than-deserves to get his head in front. I particularly like the fact that he naturally hits the ball both ways, which gives him a big advantage around Augusta. Having achieved Top 10 finishes in all four Majors during his career, it could well be time for Xander to pick up the Major number one spot.
