The Open Championship now done and dusted and what a tournament it has been. We had entertainment from start to finish, with Xander Schauffele making it two wins in the Majors this year. He has clearly underlined the fact that he is the second best golfer in the world, and is sure to continue improving. He is such a complete player now and certainly has a decent chance of taking top spot for the second time at this year’s Summer Games. He is perhaps a little bit short in the market now though, so I will be taking him on.
Action from the Men’s Tournament at the Summer Games takes place at Le Golf Nationale. This is only the third time the Summer Games has included a golf tournament, but the last two didn’t disappoint and with a top class field lining up, we should be in for a great event once again. Nothing changes as far as format goes. It’s still a 72-hole stroke play contest, but there is no cut this week so the full field of 60 players will all tackle the 72 holes to determine the outright winner. Justin Rose won the top spot in 2016, Xander Schaufelle took it in 2020, and this year it looks set to be another star-studded line up. All I know is that it will take a serious performance to win this event.
William Hill is my bookie choice for this historical event thanks to them offering the best prices and six places. If you don’t already have an account there, then it’s worth knowing that new customers can also collect a handy free bet bonus when they sign up.
Bet £10, and you’ll get £30 in free bets. Planning a punt? Then why not take advantage!
This week Le Golf Nationale plays host to the Men’s Summer Games Golf Tournament, and what a fantastic course this is. It has a wide range of holes that will prove to be a real tough test for the players this week, and it’s sure to bring plenty of drama along the way too.
Le Golf Nationale is a Par 71 course stretching to 7,174 yards, with just three Par 5s. The course has a wide variety of holes, but many are island greens surrounded by water, making accurate iron play essential. A lot of approach shots will be from up to 150 yards out, so those who excel with their irons will have the best chance of achieving birdie opportunities. Greens in regulation stats will also be crucial here. For those players who find the greens, low scores are only possible if their short game is on point too. But whatever happens, we are in for a treat this week, so relax, and enjoy.
My first betting tip for the Men’s Golf Tournament is US player and world number six Collin Morikawa. He is a six-time winner on the PGA Tour who has enjoyed a strong season this year, achieving seven Top 10 finishes. Although he hasn't secured a win, he has come very close at times and this course seems tailor-made for him.
He has only been outside the Top 20 once in his last 11 starts, and even then he was only one shot away. Le Golf Nationale demands accuracy from tee to green, which has been Collin’s main strength this season, with his iron play being particularly impressive.
While his putting has occasionally let him down, this accuracy-based course plays to his strengths, and on paper, he suits it better than most. Collin Morikawa deserves to secure a win, and he ticks a lot of boxes this week. I can easily see him picking up the top spot at this year’s Summer Games.
My longshot pick for the 2024 Summer Games is French player Matthieu Pavon. He is a seriously talented player and has already won on both the DP World Tour and the PGA Tour, so he looks the ideal candidate to play well in his home country. He is up to world number 23 now, yet his price definitely discredits his ability, especially so at a course that suits his game very well.
He only joined the PGA Tour this season, and won on just his third start, which was seriously impressive and he has continued on in good form since. Aside from his win in the Farmers Insurance Open, he also has four Top 10s to go with it which include a Top 5 finish in the US Open. He also finished tied for 12th at the Masters and has no issues handling the pressure. He hits a long way off the tee, his ball striking with his irons is superb, and he has a wonderful short game to go with it. If the best version of Matthieu Pavon turns up this week, I expect him to perform really well at an insultingly big price.
Collin Morikawa @ 12/1
Matthieu Pavon @ 66/1
