For this week’s golf, I’m covering two events for you. On the PGA Tour we have the Sony Open in Hawaii and over on the DP World Tour we have the Dubai Invitational, two fantastic events to get stuck into. It’s EW singles only for both of these two tournaments, but with tons of places up for grabs at Coral, my selections all deserve your close scrutiny.
From next week, I’ll be selecting full size fields again as the season starts to get more lively anfd I’ll also have my first cross tour doubles of the season put up ready for you.
I have an unreal deal for you this week. Not only does Coral have 10 places available for the PGA Tour Sony Open. If you sign up today and bet £5, you can get £20 in free bets. The perfect opportunity to take advantage of this week’s golfing events.
This week the PGA Tour is off to the Waialae Country Club in Hawaii for the Sony Open and we have a very good field here from a betting perspective. The course is a Par 70, played over 7044 yds and this is an entirely different kettle of fish to last week’s event.
The Waialae Country Club is much flatter and it’s a course where players are likely to use much more course management. They won’t be required to hit off all the tee’s this week, but there are a few holes where risk and reward comes into play, so it will be very interesting to see how they all play the course this week.
For those that like to follow stats, good Iron play would be the one that I‘d look at closely for this week and you definitely want a player who can keep his composure.
My first selection for this week is JT Poston. This man really impressed me last season too – he just got better and better as the year went on. He has started this season in good form too, having tied for fifth in last week’s Sentry Tournament.
Better still, he is a very calm player who is superb with his irons and a good putter. I’m certain he’s destined to win plenty of PGA Tour titles over the next few seasons and I certainly wouldn’t put anyone off backing him this week. Having looked very closely at all of the players near the top of the market, JT Poston truly stands out and he is by far the best value for this week’s Sony Open at a massive 33/1.
Denny McCarthy is a player I believe will have a big season in 2024 and I think he has a big opportunity this week to secure his first PGA Tour title. He was in contention a fair few times last season and didn’t quite manage to get the job done, but I think his time is now very near.
He is an exceptional iron player and definitely one of the more adaptable players on Tour. Not only do I see him as value for this week’s event, I also think he will have a great chance in the US Open later on in the season, so remember where you heard that first when he wins. But joking aside, I believe this could be a breakthrough year for Denny McCarthy and at 40/1, he has to be worth backing this week.
The DP World Tour kick starts its season with a 60-man field in the Dubai Invitational, which is held at the Dubai Creek resort. The course is a Par 71, played over 7059 yds and this is going to be a fantastic watch. There is plenty of water around this course and the 17th and 18th holes are fascinating closing holes too.
The reason I say that, is because if you play the last two holes in the morning, you are generally playing downwind. However if you are playing in the afternoon, it’s completely the opposite, as you are facing directly into a strong breeze, which will make it a very entertaining with a late Sunday finish anticipated.
The 18th hole is particularly daunting, with water down both sides of the fairway, and that’s on top of the water just short of the green and also to the left and right of it! Only a player that can really keep his cool is going to close out the tournament this week and I have my selection right here for you.
Jordan Smith is a player I have always been fond of and he always plays very well over in the UAE. He won the Ras Al Khaimah in really good fashion and I fairly certain that he is ready to win first time out this season.
He has been on Tour a while now, but he is still improving and definitely looks comfortable on the big stage. He has one of the nicest swings in golf and his power and calm demeanour will really help him out this week. Of course, Rory McIlroy is going to be hard to beat this week, but if there’s ever a man in with a chance of doing just that, then it’s Jordan Smith, who is very good value indeed at 25/1.
