We have two big opens to take a look at this week and I’m feeling very positive about our chances. It wasn’t the best outcome for my selections on the PGA Tour last week, but I am hoping to make amends.
On the PGA Tour we have the Mexico Open at Vidanta Vallarta where I have two selections for you. Then it’s on to the DP World Tour, which heads to Nairobi this week for the Magical Kenya Open. The latter is one of my favourite events of the year and I’m really looking forward to the action getting underway.
Last year I put up Jorge Campillo, who won for us at 33/1, and I’m hoping that a repeat performance is in order this time around Meanwhile, I’m just finalising my Lucky 15 selections for this season’s Majors and I’ll have those out to you soon.
Once again Ladbrokes is my chosen bookie for this week, as they are offering an unbeatable 10 places for the PGA Tour and a solid seven slots for the DPWT. They also have a fantastic bet £5, get £20 in free bets offer, so if you don’t have an account there already, now is a good time to change that.
This week, the PGA Tour is in Mexico, at Vidanta Vallarta, and we have a hot favourite for this week’s event. Last year’s winner Tony Finau heads the market at 7/1 and he has a great chance for sure, but there is better value to be had in this field.
The course is a Par 71 over 7456 yards and you can expect plenty of low scores here. Players will be able to take dead aim all week, and those that have their irons and wedges on point, willgo very close in this week’s event.
My strongest selection is Chesson Hadley and I think he is going to put on a big performance this week. As mentioned, you need a player that has a good iron game, combined with good wedge skills, and his wedge play particularly has been fantastic of late.
I find with Chesson that when he is swinging well and gets into a rhythm, he can really get on a birdie run, which makes him very dangerous in this sort of event. Don’t get me wrong, he can be very hit and miss at times, but if Chesson Hadley comes here on point, he has a great chance on this golf course.
My second selection for the Mexico Open is two-time PGA Tour winner Emiliano Grillo. He may be a tad short in the betting, but I think he has a lot in his favour this week. I have been really impressed with his game over the past season or so and his iron play has been absolutely tremendous.
Good iron play is essential on this course and it’s that area of his game that enabled him to win the Charles Schwab Challenge last year and brought him up to world number 40. Emiliano Grillo ticks a lot of boxes for me this week, and I think he has a great chance here.
For the DP World Tour we head off to Nairobi for the Magical Kenya Open. We had the winner here last year, Jorge Campillo, who did the job for us at 33/1. However, he has opted to play in the Mexico Open this week, so his title is up for grabs.
This event takes place at Muthaiga Golf Club, a beautiful setting over 7228 yards, which is a Par 71. Solid iron play and a superb short game won the event for Jorge Campillo last season and players will need a similar set of credentials again this year.
My selection for this week’s Kenya Open is world number 134, Romain Langasque. I firmly believe that he has the exact set of skills needed for this event – he is a really good ball striker and he is extremely reliable from tee to green, which is a huge help here.
His putting is also pretty good usually, and with how slick the greens are going to be this week, that will be another solid trait that will play in his favour. You don’t need to be a flashy player this week, you just need to be a solid and consistent ball striker and that describes Romain Langasque to the tee.
