Glorious Goodwood Festival Day 3

1:50pm 2m4½f Coral Goodwood Handicap (Class 2) (3yo+ 0-105)

Defiantly is a lightly‑raced 4yo who keeps hinting there’s a big one in him, and his Royal Ascot run suggested he’s very close to delivering it. Upped dramatically in trip from 1m6f to 2m4f, he proved beyond doubt that stamina is his strongest suit. In first time blinkers he travelled boldly, sat handy throughout, and rallied hard once headed, only losing out by a head to his stablemate. It was a huge step forward and comfortably the best performance of his season so far. That Ascot Stakes form looks solid, and although he’s up 4lb, he still appeals as a horse with more improvement to come over extreme distances. He’s effective from 11f right up to 20f, handles yielding, soft and good to firm ground, and the blinkers clearly sharpened him, so if they work again, he’s right in the mix.

His trainer is in excellent form, and Defiantly arrives here with momentum rather than question marks. He’s still learning, still strengthening, and his lightly‑raced profile suggests he hasn’t reached his ceiling yet. Believitanducan has swept through his races this season, and Annabel’s Ghost is another strong stayer, but Defiantly’s Ascot run stands out. He rallied once headed, kept finding, and showed the kind of attitude you want in these marathon handicaps. If he reproduces that level, and there’s every reason to think he can,  Defiantly has a major chance of going one better off this new mark.

Selection: Defiantly 2/1 with BetMGM

2:25pm 1m HKJC World Pool Thoroughbred Stakes (Group 3) (Class 1) (3yo)

Talk Of New York has been climbing the ladder all season and now finds himself with a golden opportunity to stamp his authority at Group 3 level. A highly progressive colt, he’s already 3 from 5 and has improved with each run since the hood was applied. His Heron Stakes win at Sandown was the first big signal, he sat off a strong pace set by a stablemate, travelled like a proper horse, and then stormed clear with a decisive turn of foot. It was the performance of a colt going places. He backed that up with a superb effort in the St James’s Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot, finishing third behind Bow Echo and Gstaad, beaten just two lengths. He pulled hard early, didn’t get the smoothest trip, yet still ran right to the line, and that form is comfortably the strongest on offer here.

Dropping into Group 3 company, he sets a clear standard and has 7lb plus in hand on official ratings .A mile on fast ground suits him perfectly, and he’s already shown he handles good ground and the all weather. If he settles better than he did at Ascot, he should be very hard to stop. There are dangers, of course. Shayem arrives after a Listed win at Newmarket and is improving, while Saber Strike could take a step forward with first‑time blinkers. Yazin is another who could bounce back. But Talk Of New York has already shown Group 1 calibre, travels strongly, and finishes well. With more to come and conditions in his favour, he looks the one they all have to beat, and this drop in grade should play right into his hands.

Selection: Talk Of New York 8/15 with BetMGM

3:00pm 1m Coral Golden Mile (Heritage Handicap) (Class 2) (3yo+)

Tribal Chief is always a little risky to follow because he can be slowly away and needs the race to unfold perfectly, but when things do fall right he’s a seriously talented hold up miler. His record this season shows exactly that, placed efforts in two major handicaps, the Lincoln at Doncaster and the Victoria Cup at Ascot,  both strong pieces of form that underline his consistency. He also has valuable course experience. He finished a creditable sixth in this race 12 months ago before returning to Goodwood to win over C&D next time, proving he handles the track’s rhythm and undulations. With renowned hold up specialist Jamie Spencer taking the ride for the first time, this could be the day everything aligns.

Last time at Sandown he blew the start completely yet still did well to finish sixth, beaten just over 3 lengths by Indalo. He’s effective at 7f, well suited by 1m, acts on any ground, and remains a reliable type when he gets the breaks. His draw helps too, eight of the last ten winners of this race came from low stalls, which boosts his chance further. This looks a tricky renewal, but Tribal Chief has been targeted at it. His hold up style, Spencer’s booking, and his proven C&D form all point towards a big run. The dangers include Beagle Bay and Blue Brother, both progressive, but Tribal Chief’s blend of experience, finishing power, and track suitability makes him a major player,  provided he breaks cleanly and gets the gaps when he needs them.

Selection: Tribal Chief 11/2 with BetMGM

3:35pm 5f King George Qatar Stakes (Group 2) (Class 1) (3yo+)

Knight Raider has looked a completely different horse since being gelded, and everything about his profile suggests he’s still improving. Before this season he’d often promised more than he delivered, but the operation has clearly sharpened him mentally and physically. He returned with a dominant Group 3 win at Newmarket, travelling strongly and putting the race to bed with authority, then backed it up in the Temple Stakes at Haydock, overcoming a tardy start to win again. Royal Ascot didn’t show him at his best, the low draw scuppered him in the King Charles III Stakes, forcing him away from the main action yet he still finished ahead of most on his side and wasn’t beaten far. That stiff 5f doesn’t play to his strengths anyway, he’s far better suited to a fast, flat, speed‑favouring track like this one, where his natural pace and front‑running style can be fully exploited.

He’s versatile too, effective at 5f and 6f, acts on good to soft and fast ground, and has already shown he can mix it at Group 1 level. His sixth in this race last year, again away from the main action reads well now he’s an improved model. The dangers are clear. Jakajaro has raw speed and could thrive over this flying 5f, Rumstar brings solid Group 3 form, and last year’s winner Jm Jungle is no pushover. But Knight Raider has been rejuvenated, arrives in top form, and this track plays perfectly to his strengths. Even with the 3lb penalty, he looks the one they’ll all have to catch.

Selection: Knight Raider 11/4 with BetMGM

4:10pm 1m1f Regent Seven Seas Cruises Bentinck Conditions Stakes (Class 2) (4yo+)

Haatem is a smart, versatile performer who has already shown he can peak at this meeting, and despite a couple of below‑par results this season, he looks primed to bounce back. Last year he landed the Wolferton in gutsy fashion, digging deep to overhaul Galen late on, and that came after winning the Group 2 Vintage Stakes here as a 2yo. Goodwood clearly brings out the best in him, and this test looks tailor‑made for a revival. His two runs this term both came with excuses. On reappearance he shaped as though needing the run, and at Royal Ascot he simply never got a run in the Wolferton, trapped, eased, and unable to show anything. You can safely put a line through that effort. He’s effective from 7f to 10f, acts on any ground, and remains a classy operator when things fall right.

Boiling Point sets a fair standard and is a former course winner, but he carries a penalty that could leave him vulnerable. Galen again has strong form claims after a wide trip fourth in the Wolferton, while Jonquil is still capable on his day. If there’s an upset brewing, Crown Of Oaks is the one, a highly progressive handicapper last season who didn’t fire on Irish reappearance but is better than that. Still, Haatem’s profile stands out. He’s a proven Group 2 winner at this meeting, a Wolferton winner, and a horse who thrives around Goodwood’s turning, flowing mile and a quarter. With excuses behind him and conditions back in his favour, he looks ready to produce one more big day, and this race gives him the perfect opening to do it.

Selection: Haatem 5/2 with BetMGM
