Erzindjan deserves redemption in the Cambridgeshire!
After last year’s run, which I’ll come onto in the next section, Erzindjan deserves another shot at the Cambridgeshire. Given his run in last year’s renewal, I’m shocked he is available at 33/1 but I’m certainly not complaining! In this article, I’ll be explaining why I like his chances for this valuable Newmarket heritage handicap.
Erzindjan was unlucky in last year’s renewal
As is often the case in these big Flat races, draw bias can often dictate the result or at the very least, heavily influence it. Last year’s renewal of the Cambridgeshire developed on the far side of the track, with horses drawn that side producing the 1-2-3.
Therefore, I thought it was a huge run from Erzindjan to finish fourth despite the disadvantage of being drawn on the near side. As he hit the line, he was only a length and a half off the winner and a long way clear of the other horses that raced on the near side of the track.
Erzindjan won a valuable Handicap over C&D in May
After his fourth in the Cambridgeshire, Erzindjan went on to run fifth in another valuable handicap at York, before taking his chance in Listed company back at Newmarket where he could only finish eighth.
He was given a 182-day break before returning in the valuable Suffolk Stakes (heritage handicap) which is run over the same C&D as the Cambridgeshire. Off a mark of 99, 1lb higher than his Cambridgeshire run, he got his head in front. He relished the quick conditions and scooped ÂŁ51,540 for winning that race.
Erzindjan is competitively handicapped
After the Suffolk Stakes win, Erzindjan went to Royal Ascot for the Royal Hunt Cup and he finished a very respectable sixth, beaten just 3.5 lengths. After another break of 66 days, he returned to the John Smith’s Cup last weekend, where he had previously finished fifth last year but he could only finish twelfth this time around.
That latest run came off a mark of 101 but he’s been reduced 1lb to 100 after that. Therefore, he’ll be just 2lb above last year’s Cambridgeshire mark and just 1lb above his C&D win in the Suffolk Stakes back in May. Therefore, he’s handicapped to be very competitive and with a kinder draw, I think he is capable of winning this £200,000 handicap!
Incidentally, I would be surprised if the current Cambridgeshire market favourite, Raammee, actually runs here. I believe it’s far more likely that Raammee will move on to race in pattern company after his latest handicap rise to 107.
Can Erzindjan improve on his fourth last year?
The positives here are clear. Erzindjan was unlucky in last year’s renewal, he proved himself in another valuable C&D Handicap and he’s rated competitively for this year’s renewal. He is also following the same path as last year by running at the Ebor Festival and then being freshened up for a month or so before coming here.
If you were to look for negatives, he failed to win the race last year despite running off a 2lb lower mark than he will this year. That said, he did have a draw bias excuse. There is also the fact that he is a fragile horse, so we are gambling on T J Kent and the team keeping him sound for the big day.
After considering the positives and negatives, there’s the odds. At 33/1 Erzindjan is simply too good to ignore in my opinion. The rest of the market sits around 20/1 so 33/1 looks tremendous value to me. Given the risks attached though, I have trimmed the stake down slightly to 0.75pt each way.
