It’s Day 2 of the 2026 Cheltenham Festival and here comes my second betting tip for today. We move away from the Grade 1 action for this one, as my selection runs in the Grand Annual, or to give the race its full title, the Johnny Henderson Grand Annual Challenge Cup Handicap Chase. I think this Irish mare is being underestimated at 16/1 and I think she’ll outperform those odds.
This may be the first time you’ve seen my free horse racing tips. If so, then welcome! I’m Gav, better known as RacingGav at Betting.co.uk and on X. I have been the resident horse racing expert here for over 12 months now, and you are more than welcome to review my results from March to December 2025 should you want to check out my credentials.
In addition to this betting tip, my selection for the Turners Novices’ Hurdle went live earlier, and I have also covered the feature race of the day, the Champion Chase, in a third article, so be sure to take a look at those too.
As I write this, the best horse racing odds for Break My Soul stand at 16/1 with two different bookmakers. However, one is offering four places, but bet365 is offering five, which makes a big difference in my world. In addition, bet365 has a great sign up offer too. If you bet £10, you’ll get £30 of free bets. That’s fantastic all round value!
Day 1 of the 2026 Cheltenham Festival was fantastic for the mares. Kargese landed the Arkle, Lossiemouth and Brighterdayahead provided a mares’ 1-2 in the Champion Hurdle, and Holloway Queen won the finale in great style. I think Break My Soul can also win the Grand Annual for the ladies and in this article, I’ll break down my case for her!
Break My Soul’s story started in an Irish PTP at Tinahely, where she beat Electric Mason (139) and Double Power (136). So right off the bat, her form caught my attention. The following month she was sent to the sales at the 2023 Cheltenham Festival, and fetched £290,000. She was placed with Nicky Henderson, who sent her straight out over Hurdles. With form figures of 32311242 she was hardly a flop, but she only reached a rating of 126.
For reasons unknown, she was sold for just £70,000 in January 2025, and went to Ian Donoghue’s yard under the ownership of Matthew Rogers. Ian Donoghue was keen to send her straight over fences, but his brother, who is also the stable jockey, convinced Ian to stick to Hurdles. As a result, they aimed high, and entered her for the Grade 3 the Red Mills Trial Hurdle, where she split a pair of talented Closutton horses, Kitzbuhel and Sir Gerhard, who are both Graded performers.
Break My Soul bypassed the 2025 Cheltenham Festival , and ran in the Grade 1 Aintree Hurdle instead where she finished fourth behind Lossiemouth, Wodhooh and Take No Chances, and there is no shame in that. She was never a threat to the front pair, but it was a very respectable display. She then picked up fourth place prize money in the Champion Hurdle at Punchestown, finishing ahead of the below par Constitution Hill.
Break My Soul was put away for a summer break and returned over fences at Gowran in November. She ended up making a winning debut over fences, winning comfortably by three and half lengths to the €500,000 purchase - Qualimita. They then threw her in Grade 2 company when she finished fourth with the subsequent Arkle winner - Kargese, finishing second. Again, they didn’t hold back in her next start either, letting her take her chance in the Grade 1 Novice Chase at Leopardstown on Boxing Day, where she was in rear throughout.
Given the calibre of races they have been entering in and the fact they initially entered her for the Arkle and the Mares Chase as well as this handicap, it’s clear to see that they hold her in very high regard. She’s rated 140 over hurdles but comes here over fences off a 4lb lower mark of 136. Interestingly outside of the Grade 1 run, her three runs have been on Heavy, Soft and Heavy which I’m not convinced shows her at her best. Her best form to date came at Aintree on better ground and I think she could really enjoy the quicker ground on offer at Cheltenham here.
A friend of mine over in Ireland reached out to me on Monday morning to say that this mare will go very close or could even win the Grand Annual. The stable reportedly feel that she has really turned a corner in the last two weeks and that she has been working the place down. Some horses simply take their form to another level in the Spring and some are campaigned with the Spring in mind shall we say. Either way, it’s not usual to see horses showing very different form between the Winter and the Spring and hopefully she’ll be one of them.
That Aintree performance was very solid, finishing within 12 lengths of a subsequent Champion Hurdle winner in Lossiemouth. Especially considering they have always viewed her as a chaser. If she was able to translate that level of form across to her fences, she could be very well handicapped off a mark of 136. I’d also say it’s no coincidence that she just happens to find herself in a Cheltenham Festival handicap on her handicap debut. They gave her a 51 day break after her venture into Grade 1 company and she then had the fourth run required over fences to qualify for these Cheltenham Festival handicaps.
A lot of whispers go around about horses at these big meetings, especially in these competitive handicaps. However, it is pleasing to see that the reported strong vibes from the stable are being reflected in the betting market with Break My Soul seeing money from 25/1 into 16/1 and she is even as short as 11/1 in places. I wouldn’t be surprised to see the money keep flowing, so I’m happy to take the 16/1 now.
Regular readers will be used to me saying this by now but deciding on bets is all about weighing up the positives, the negatives and the odds.
In terms of the positives, she has some fantastic form in the book including at the very highest level. She has always been viewed as a chaser, so you would be hoping her chase form would eclipse her hurdling form but as it stands, she is lower rated over fences and she could be ready to exploit that now. I also think she will be a better horse on better ground and switching from the testing ground over in Ireland through the winner to this lovely spring ground at Cheltenham could bring about plenty of improvement. The stable seem very sweet on her chances judging on what I have heard from a friend and the market is reflecting that confidence here.
There are some negatives to consider though. A lot of her best form has come in small fields and therefore there has to be a question mark over how she will handle the hustle and bustle of this 20 runner Cheltenham Festival handicap. Especially one that is as fast and furious as the Grand Annual. There is also the lack of Cheltenham experience to consider and not all horses act at the track. We are also gambling on her improving upon her form over fences to date and there is no guarantee that will happen.
As you can see, there are both positives and negatives for Break My Soul. However, considering the whole picture and the current odds of 16/1 with five places on offer, I think she is worth an each way bet. With the negatives in mind though, I am going to trim the stake down to half stakes (0.5pt Each Way).
