It’s been a great start for the December tips here. Yesterday was especially good, with a 20/1 winner in the form of Trac. And things can only get better as we head off for the action at the home of Jumps racing today - the one and only Cheltenham! A few different horses have interested me today, but I’ve decided on one in particular for my article today.

Mister Coffey deserves to get his head in front over fences!
It’s really quite remarkable that after making his Chase debut in November 2021, off a mark of 138, Mister Coffey remains a maiden 17 Chase starts later. He is currently rated 4lb higher on 142, having touched as high as 145 over fences. During his Chase career he has finished second on nine separate occasions and third on a further three. He will return to the winners’ enclosure as a hero if he can finally get his head in front, and I think today could be the day.

Mister Coffey competed in this same race last year and he rather characteristically finished in second place However, there is absolutely no shame in that defeat. In fact, I feel there is an awful lot of credit. He came to make his challenge after the last, and pulled clear with Gavin Cromwell’s horse, Stumptown.
Stumptown won off a mark of 149 that day, he followed that up at the Cheltenham Festival off an increased mark of 157. Not to mention his visit to Pardubice in the Czech Republic, where won the Velka Pardubicka se Slavia Pojist'ovnou (Listed Cross Country Chase) too! Obviously his form has well and truly been franked, and thankfully he hasn’t been entered for today’s race. If you were to take Stumptown out of last year’s renewal, Mister Coffey would have been an impressive winner.

Mister Coffey has tackled this specialist course and distance on three occasions now. On his first attempt, he was second to the French raider Sweet David. On his second attempt, he was second to Stumptown, as mentioned above. Most recently, he was fifth at the Cheltenham Festival. On each occasion he has run a very solid race, clearly showing that he enjoys himself around this unique course.
Mister Coffey now tackles the Cross Country for the fourth time, and with so much valuable experience under his belt, he could go one better this time. Especially with Stumptown’s notable absence today.

What I also find particularly interesting is that Mister Coffey was due to run in the November edition of this race. Unfortunately the Cross Country course was not fit for racing at that time, and the race was cancelled. Instead of waiting for this race to be rescheduled, Nicky Henderson decided to run Mister Coffey in the Veterans’ Chase.
Logically, with Mister Coffey being at the veteran stage of his career, it makes sense to let him take on older horses. However, it was a race run over a completely inadequate trip of 2m 4f, being one of the Middle Distance series. Considering that was a long way short of his ideal trip, I think he ran a huge race to finish second that day. He’s clearly in fantastic shape, and if he can bring that same performance to this race, he must have a great shot.
Can Mister Coffey get his head in front this time?
In terms of the positives, Mister Coffey was second in this race last year and that form has been franked. In fact, all three of his runs over this C&D have been very respectable. I see no reason why he cannot run another big race this time, especially when you consider the performance he put on last time out over an inadequate trip of 2m 4f. Back up to 3m 5.5f and over the Cross Country course, I think he has every right to run a huge race.
On the negative side, you simply have to factor in that he is 0 from 17 over fences, and while he typically runs an admirable race, you have to consider that he may not win once again. Also, as he keeps running so well in defeat, the handicapper is never really giving him any help. Despite remaining winless since his second place in the Cross Country race last year, he actually comes here off a 2lb higher mark. As a result, he’s giving weight away to most of his rivals.
Weighing up the positives, negatives, and his 13/2 price with four places on offer, I think Mister Coffey is a rock solid each way bet. I’d be pretty shocked if he doesn’t finish in the first four, and I’d say he has a fantastic chance of finally breaking his maiden over fences. I want to have a solid bet on him, but given his 0/17 record over fences, I’ve decided to go 0.75pt each way.
