It has been a fantastic week so far. On Tuesday we enjoyed Pallas Lord winning at 11/1, then on Wednesday Planned Paradise also obliged at 5/1. It wasn’t to be for Rockinastorm yesterday, as he was taken on for the lead and raced wide. He still managed to finish in third place, but that fell short of what we needed. Today, I’m hoping to secure our third winner with a pick from the All Weather at Lingfield.
If you’re not already familiar with my content, where have you been? Joking aside, I’m RacingGav and I’m the resident horse racing expert here at Betting.co.uk. My main task here is to provide you with free horse racing tips, and I’m sure that’s why you’re reading this article right now.
Alongside betting tips I often publish big race trends, educational guides and other horse racing content on a weekly basis. If you want to take a look at some of the guides that I have already posted, I’d recommend taking a look at my articles about market movers and racing weights, as both will come in very handy during the Cheltenham Festival.
At the time of writing, most bookmakers are offering 5/1 with three places. So without any standout horse racing odds I’ve looked at the sign up offers to decide on my recommendation, and the best offer currently out there is at Betfred. If you bet £10, you’ll get £50 in free bets. That’s a fantastic offer, so get Cheltenham ready!
It’s always exciting to spot a rapidly improving horse, as you never know how high up the ladder they might climb. Today, Wyld Bill takes his next step, and I’m very interested to see how he gets on at Lingfield today, as I think he has more improvement to come.
It’s safe to say that Chris Housego got a bargain when he picked up Wyld Bill for just 1,000 Guineas in January last year. It looked too good to be true initially when he only managed a fifth and a sixth on his first two starts over 7f for his new trainer Denis Quinn. However, since he stepped up in trip and started racing in Handicaps, Wyld Bill has been extremely progressive.
Since tackling 1m 2f and 1m 3f Handicaps, he has produced form figures of 516121511-1 equating to six wins from nine Handicap races, and a 30lb rise from 57 to 87. He even has excuses for his losing runs. On his first Handicap start on the AW at Kempton, over 1m 3f, he was ridden to stay, but he didn’t quite get home. His sixth place at Ffos Las was run over 1m 2f on Heavy going which didn’t suit.
Wyld Bill’s only other big defeat was at Chelmsford in October, where he raced wide, eventually placing fifth. Aside from his second place at Newcastle, where he was ridden by a Claimer who perhaps didn’t ride him strongly enough. In every other Handicap start he has come home in front. With a progressive horse like this, they can just keep on improving, and hopefully that’s the case for Wyld Bill.
Wyld Bill has had two starts at Lingfield, both over this trip and he won both in good style. His first win came off a mark of 72 and he won by no less than 13 lengths. After winning at Kempton in the interim, he came back here last time out and won again off a mark of 85.
Two things impressed me about his last win. He handled the extra weight well, and he came from the rear back of the field in a race where there was a sprint for the finish off a steady pace, which is not easy to do!
The sectional times and speeds for his two C&D wins read very well in comparison to the last year’s edition of today’s race, which gives me plenty of optimism. That said, there will likely be a stronger gallop in today’s race which will either catch him out, or bring more improvement, hopefully the latter!
This race is a big ask for Wyld Bill. To date, he has only ever run in Class 4, 5, or 6 races but this will be a step up to Class 2. With £45,000 on offer, it’s also a very hot looking Class 2 Handicap, and three of the horses lining up here have three figure ratings, including the Cesarewitch winner, Beylerbeyi.
However, Wyld Bill has landed the jackpot draw in stall one, so you couldn’t ask for more. In addition, he is receiving over a stone from the top horses in this race. King’s Code is rated 103 and carries 9st 12lb, whereas Wyld Bill runs off 87 and only carries 8st 10lb. That weight difference could play a big part in the result.
Furthermore, after enjoying success with Jack Callan and Jack Dace claiming 5lb the last three times Wyld Bill raced, connections have opted for a 5lb claimer once again. This time, they have brought in Mason Paetel, who is a very capable apprentice jockey. That means Wyld Bill will carry just 8st 5lb today.
The positives are plentiful for Wyld Bill. He has an excellent record of six wins from nine Handicap races, so he is certainly going the right way. With excuses for his defeats, his potential could be even greater. Two strong victories over C&D also bode well for today’s race, assuming he can bring that form to this bigger stage. A perfect draw, low racing weight, and Mason Paetel’s 5lb claim all further his case.
In terms of the negatives, this is a big step up in grade from Class 4 to Class 2, and it might find him out. It could be a step beyond him, but there is only one way to find out, and he certainly deserves a crack at it. It’s also a risk to book a jockey who has not ridden the horse before, which is the case here. That said, Mason has plenty of talent, so I’m not overly concerned.
All fact considered, I think he is worth a strong each way bet at 5/1. I can see him continuing to progress and playing a huge part in the finish here; hopefully at the front. Given the step up in class, and in respect of the opposition here, I’m only playing 1pt each way, and not getting carried away with my stake.
