Horse Racing Betting Tips - Saturday 14 March 2026 - Uttoxeter - Midlands Grand National

Key Points
  • Today’s betting tip has some seriously strong form in the book
  • After a long wait, he finally gets his ideal conditions today
  • He can continue a fantastic week for Jamie Snowden and Gavin Sheehan!

We have been lucky to enjoy four fantastic days of action over at the Cheltenham Festival this week. However, just because the home of racing has closed their gates, it doesn’t mean the show is over. We have more great racing elsewhere today and the feature race of it all is the Midlands Grand National over at Uttoxeter! My betting tip for today comes in that very race and it’s one I’m very sweet on and coincidentally, he has Cheltenham Festival form in the book with none other than subsequent Cheltenham Gold Cup winner - Inothewayurthinkin!

If you’re just reading one of my articles for the first time, I’m Gav, better known as RacingGav on X/Twitter. I’m the resident horse racing expert here and I publish several articles each week for this site. These are predominantly free horse racing tips, whether that be on the day (like this one) or antepost and thankfully, they have made a very healthy profit to date! I also produce other types of articles such as big race trends, educational guides and more, so there really should be something for everybody to enjoy.

Generally outside of the big meetings, I’ll post one article per day. However, each Saturday I publish two articles, my main betting tip and a Lucky 15 with selections across the ITV Racing action, which is more for fun! This week’s Lucky 15 has selections from Uttoxeter and Kempton and it’s already live, so make sure you take a look at that when you’ve finished reading this one!

Betting advice

  • 15:00 Uttoxeter - Git Maker @ 7/1 (5 places) - 2pt each way

Back Git Maker with StarSports - Best odds, place terms and ÂŁ10 free bet!

As I write this article, StarSports are offering the joint best horse racing odds of 7/1 for Git Maker to win. In addition, while some bookies are only offering four places, StarSports is offering five! The cherry on top is that if you’re a new customer and bet £20, you’ll get a £10 free bet. It’s definitely worth signing up if you don’t already have an account.

Git Maker can be our money maker!

I have long thought that Git Maker has a big staying Handicap in him, and the conditions finally look right for him to have his day in the sun! In this article, I’ll break down my case for him, so keep reading to understand my logic.

Git Maker has some seriously strong form in the book

Git Maker relished the switch to fences in the 2022/23 season, producing form figures of 2211 in his first four starts over the larger obstacles. Then on his first start of the 2023/24 season, he made it a hat-trick of wins. All of this looks great, but I actually believe that his strongest form to date has actually come in defeat.

I tipped him at a huge price for the 2024 Kim Muir, with the extended 3m 2f trip and a stiff finish like the Cheltenham hill, I thought he had the perfect set of conditions. The one aspect that I didn’t account for was Inothewayurthinkin being ahead of the handicapper, just over two stone ahead in fact, and a future Cheltenham Gold Cup winner! As a result, there was no shame in the defeat for Git Maker, as he had the rest beaten, he was just very unlucky to bump into a future superstar that day.

The other piece of form I really like is his third place in the Scottish Grand National, where he only found MacDermott and Surrey Quest too good. He was unable to reach that front pair on the day, despite clocking a faster final furlong than both. Which just goes to show how well he stays these marathon trips. Sadly, he hasn’t had his ideal conditions since theno!

After a long wait, Git Maker finally gets his ideal conditions today

From April 2024 to March 2026, we have seen Git Maker on the track six times. I wouldn’t pay much attention to his two runs over Hurdles as they were just to blow away the cobwebs after a break, and he is a better horse over fences. I’d certainly focus more on his four runs over fences.

For his two runs at Haydock in the 2025 and 2026 Grand National Trial, the going was only Good to Soft. In 2025, even that is debatable, with the time being 4.8s slow, suggesting it was nearer to Good. Despite that, he still managed to finish third, albeit a remote one. In the 2026 renewal, it was Good to Soft again, but with the time 22.27s slow, it suggests the ground was more testing than the year before. He consequently put in a much better performance than the year before, beaten by less than four lengths.

His other two runs have come in the 2025 Kim Muir where he had excuses - The ground was too quick, he was hampered after four out and he finished lame on his right-fore leg and then the 2025 Welsh Grand National. Sadly whilst officially described as Good to Soft at Chepstow, it was far from it, as the time being 8.26s suggests, it was certainly much quicker. Today he has genuinely soft ground (according to the official going description) and now he can showcase his ability!

Git Maker can continue a fantastic week for Jamie Snowden and Gavin Sheehan!

With an aging horse like Git Maker, who is 10 now, it’s always difficult to know if it’s the lack of their ideal conditions that is causing the lesser form or whether they are simply regressing. However, after a series of poor runs on paper, Git Maker showed his ability and enthusiasm when he got closer to his ideal conditions at Haydock last time out. He would have preferred softer ground and he likely would have preferred a longer trip but he stayed on powerfully at the finish to be beaten less than four lengths. With another furlong or two to run, who knows where he would have finished but today he has another five and half furlongs to run at!

I’m sure it was starting to feel like a long week at the Cheltenham Festival for both Jamie Snowden and Gavin Sheehan after a few well beaten runners. It would have also been a blow for them to have Wendigo fall in the Grade 1 Brown Advisory Novices’ Chase when he looked set to run into the places. However, he is fit and well following that thankfully and I’m sure he’ll be back. All of that will be forgotten now though as the pair teamed up to produce the Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle winner - Johnny’s Jury and that was despite being more than just inconvenienced by the start! A power packed finish from Gavin Sheehan saw them land the Grade 1 honours and he will need to flex those muscles again on old Git Maker, I’m sure! Hopefully he gets the same result!

Can Git Maker land the ÂŁ160,000 Midlands Grand National?

If you asked me at the start of this week, I’d be very concerned about how dry the weather had been. It looked like it could have been another frustrating run for Git Maker where he didn’t get the conditions he wanted. However, thankfully it looks like the rain has appeared just in the nick of time for Git Maker! If the ground genuinely matches the official going description of “Soft”, he has to have a great chance, especially over this 4m2f trip, as he’ll stay all day!

We have seen from his strong runs in defeat in both the Kim Muir and Scottish Grand National that he is a real force when he gets his conditions. With those two runs coming off handicap marks of 132 and 133, he is certainly handicapped to be extremely competitive off this mark of 129. In fact, we saw exactly that when he stayed on powerfully at Haydock last time out off this exact same mark, when he would have preferred more testing conditions.

In terms of the negatives, he is now without a win since November 2023 and that has to worry you. However, given the story since, I’m willing to overlook it. In that time period, he has finished in the frame four times, so it’s not like he’s been out of form. He is 10 now as well, which has to be considered but with the way he performed at Haydock and the fact this is a marathon trip where stamina is required rather than speed, I’m not overly concerned about his age either.

All elements considered, I think the stage is set for a huge performance and it’s now over to Git Maker to deliver it. I’m confident he can do exactly that and therefore it is a strong 2pt Each Way bet at 7/1. Baring mishaps, I cannot see him out of the first five required for place returns and he really does deserve to get his head in front. Unlike the 2024 Kim Muir, we shouldn’t have a future Cheltenham Gold Cup winner lurking in this line up!
